He will join Stella, his loving wife of 55 years, who passed away December 29, 2007. Melvin leaves to mourn his sons, Richard and Ronald (Bonnie); grandsons Ryan (Patricia) and Darren; great-granddaughter Hayley (mother Shawna); sister Jean Wasyl of Detroit, sisters-in-law Teenie Prokopowich, Mary Posyniak of Winnipeg; and Nellie (Earl) Korzenoski of Sicamous; brothers-in-law Nick Holomay of Vancouver, Tony (Mary) Holomay and Peter Holomay of Bowsman, and numerous nieces and nephews. Melvin was predeceased by his wife Stella; father Harry in 1964; mother Annie (nee Chorniuk) in 1998; sisters Olga (Frank) Molinski, Tillie (Ernie) Fedoryn, Antonia (Nick) Sawicki; brothers-in-law Walter Wasyl and Edward Holomay; sister-in-law Tillie (Bert) Ouellette. Melvin was born in Sifton, MB on March 9, 1929 and grew up in Grandview where he met Stella in 1948. In 1952 they sought employment in Toronto where they were married on August 2, 1952. In 1956 Stella and Melvin purchased a tourist property near Thunder Bay, which they operated for a period of time then sold and moved to Winnipeg permanently. Melvin started work at Carter Day Industries in 1959 in the assembly department; retired in 1991 as plant superintendent and continued on the board of directors until his passing. After retirement Melvin continued to socialize with friends and co-workers. He was well-liked by all and everyone enjoyed his sense of humour and friendly disposition. Melvin enjoyed gardening, curling, fishing, fixing everything, helping his son Ron build his house, showing people his antique collection, and helping anyone that needed assistance (especially his neighbours) as he was a jack of all trades and happy to share his many talents. He cherished his gazebo where family friends and neighbours would gather to share stories over a game of cribbage. Melvin also volunteered at Holy Family for many years where his mother resided until her passing. Melvin loved to talk and could carry on a conversation with anyone, adding laughter and joy to any situation. Melvin took great joy in his grandchildren; the apples of his eye. He loved to tease and joke with them and listen to their many stories. He was their biggest fan and greatest supporter. Melvin took great care in making sure everyone who visited his home was welcomed, cared for and accepted for who they were. My first husband, Aaron worked with Mel many years and over time we grew to be good friends with him, Stella and the family. We enjoyed curling in the company league, camping with the kids and just generally socialising. Mel was always available to help with anything. I think electrical wiring was a real talent of his. For many years we had a standing invitation to their Ukrainian Christmas Eve dinner and we considered it an honor and a priviledge to be invited. It was a wonderful time of getting reaquainted with the now grown up family. After I remarried Peter was included. I will miss Mel as I have missed Stella. Better friends are hard to find. - Posted by: Caroline Schultz Enns (Friend) on: May 16, 2012

I ALWAYS ENJOYED TALKING TO MEL WHEN HE WOULD PICK HAYLEY UP FROM THE BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM. I WILL MISS HIS GREAT SENSE OF HUMOUR, AND HIS COMPASSION FOR PEOPLE. HE WAS NEVER TOO RUSHED OR BUSY TO STOP AND CHAT. - Posted by: MARILYN CORBITT (I WORK AT ROBERTSON SCHOOL THAT HIS GREAT GRAND-DAUGHTER, HAYLEY ATTENDS.) on: May 15, 2012

Mel volunteered for years at Holy Family. He was such a kind and thoughtful gentleman with that funny little chuckle and always willing to share a joke or a story from his past. He was an angel with the residents making sure they were comforted, assuring them that all was well and if something was not right you knew he would advocate for them. Mel was a gem and will be sadly missed. May your memories provide you comfort at this difficult time. - Posted by: Oksana Bondarchuk (Holy Family Home) on: May 15, 2012

Mel is an incredible man. He was a grandfather figure in my life, always showing me new things, telling me inspiring stories and of course, never failing to make me laugh. He taught me so much, I am so grateful to know him. His eyes were always filled with so much love and admiration, I loved that. Mel has such a big heart. He will be greatly missed. Condolences to his family. Lots of love. - Posted by: Jaina Cairns (Neighbour and Friend) on: May 13, 2012

A great loss to the world as we know it but fond memories will stay...rest in peace Mel & give Stella a hug for us! - Posted by: Angie Kalechyn along with Jean Smandych & all our families (Long Time Family Friends (related through marriage)) on: May 12, 2012
