VERA SOLVASON (nee WEST) May 16, 1927 - May 9, 2012 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dear Mother on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at the Gimli Hospital at the age of 84 years. Survived by her daughter Deborah (Bruce) Furst; sons George (Debb), Byron; her grandchildren: Olivia, Ryan, Tannis, Brendan and Jade; great-grandson Matthew; her sisters-in-law, Norma, Maxine, Hilda, Mildred, Ellen; brother Al, brothers-in-law, Wynn, John and Les; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Gunnar; her parents, John and Vera; her brothers, Jack, Gerald and Harry, sisters-in law, Adelaide, Jean, Pauline and Emily; brothers-in-law, Ingi and Stephen. Mom grew up on the farm in Fairford, MB. and left for the city at an early age. She married Gunnar on June 27, 1946 and started their life together. After a lengthy career at Eatons, Mom and Dad retired to their new home in Husavik in 1979 and enjoyed many happy hours , country Christmas' and trips to the coast. After the house became too much for Mom, she moved into the Waterfront Centre where she thoroughly enjoyed the coffee meetings, bingo and many other functions. Nana loved going for her daily walks around town and interacting with her many friends and neighbours. She enjoyed her newspaper, watching curling, a good game of hockey and most of all playing Hand and Foot with her kids and grandkids. Our family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff at the Gimli Hospital for the loving, gentle care that was given to our Mom during her last few days of her life. Thank you to her family doctor, Dr. S. V. Patel and her Oncologist, Dr. Pat Harris for their nine years of Cancer care. A memorial service will take place on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery) at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 1160 - 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 9Z9 or a charity of your choice. Though her smile is gone forever, And her hand we cannot touch. Still we have so many memories, Of the one we love so much Her memory is our keepsake, From which we will never part. I knew Aunty Vera since I was two and recall dancing for her and her parents at that age. Although I always knew her as Aunty Vera we became closer, good friends I like to think, after the passing of her husband, and my Uncle, Gunnar. Vera lived a good and honorable life and I loved to hear her laugh. Just like all those who knew her, I miss her deeply.
