LUISE MARTENS 1905 - 2012 Our beloved mother, Luise Martens, passed away on May 13, 2012 at the age of 107. She is survived by her children: Henry, Gert (Katherine), Helga (Ed Enns), Ingrid (Abe Penner) and Hildegard; her grandchildren, Erwin (Colleen), Robert (Kim), Larry (Jan), Renee (Glen), Roderic (Donna), Jennifer (Rummit), Richard (Anita), David, Ralph (Coleen), Mark, James, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Her husband, Gerhard, her daughter-in-law, Hilda Martens, and one infant grandson predeceased her. She was born in South Russia and immigrated to Canada at age 19. Luise and her husband homesteaded in Northern Ontario until 1944. They farmed in the Cartwright area until the death of her husband in 1982. Subsequently, she lived independently, first at Cartwright and then in Winnipeg until the age of 99. She then moved into Lindenwood Manor, where with help from homecare aides she lived until the age of 106, when she moved into River Park Gardens, a personal care home. She was an accomplished gardener for which she received provincial awards. Her cooking and knitting were legendary. She never forgot the hardships she experienced before coming to Canada and was generous in her support of charitable organizations. Special thanks for the kindness of Luise's caregivers at Lindenwood Manor and River Park Gardens. A Celebration of her life will take place at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, on Wednesday, May 16 at 11:00 a.m. A private burial service will be held at Cartwright for family only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee available at the service.
