Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHELENE FRIESEN Peacefully, with family by her side, on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, Helene was welcomed home by her Lord and Saviour, at the age of 77 years. Left to cherish Helene's memory are her sisters, Justa Pauls (Heinrich), Liese Wiens (Gerhard), Sara Bergmann, Maria Neufeld (Hans), Kaethe Friesen, Olga Wilmes, Erna Janzen (Peter), her many nieces and nephews to whom she was considered a second mother, cousins and dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents Johann and Justina Friesen, brothers-in-law Hans Bergmann and Karl Wilmes. Helene was born on September 19, 1934 in the Ukraine to Johann and Justina Friesen. During the Second World War, Helene's father was taken to Siberia never to be seen again. During the war years, she, along with her mother and five sisters were able to escape to Germany. During this difficult time of escape, she contracted Rheumatic Fever which would lead to health complications resulting in several heart surgeries. Eventually, she was able to immigrate to Paraguay and it was here where she fulfilled her dream to study nursing and began her career in health care. At the age of 21, she immigrated to Canada. She worked at the Health Sciences Centre until her retirement in 1991. Helene was a faithful member of the North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren Church and taught Sunday School for over 25 years. In her free time she enjoyed going to the lake, travelling, reading, crocheting and sewing many blankets for MCC. Helene touched the lives of many with her patient and gentle spirit despite her challenging health struggles. In 2006, she began a courageous battle with cancer. Her faith in Jesus will be an ongoing inspiration to those who knew her and continues to give strength and encouragement to all who trust in the Lord. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Family Life Network Ministries. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren Church, 1315 Gateway Road, with viewing prior to the service. Interment in Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
