TORU SUZUKI Toru Suzuki peacefully passed away on Monday, May 28, 2012, at the Grace Hospital at the age of 89 years. Toru was predeceased by his loving wife, Ryoko Suzuki, his parents, Shunosuke and Hide Suzuki and his brothers, Jun and Kaoru Suzuki. He is survived by his children, Kathleen (Wayne Puznicki), Edward (Joelle) and Evelyn; grandchildren, Avery, Jayden and Jessica; fondly remembered by his sisters-in-law, Yoshiko and Dorothy Suzuki; many relatives in Japan and numerous nephews and nieces. Toru was born on August 19, 1922, in Mission City, B.C. During his childhood he and his family lived in various locations in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia and enjoyed vacations in Vancouver. In 1942, Toru and his family relocated to Dominion City, MB, and in 1948, settled in Winnipeg. Toru Suzuki exchanged wedding vows with Ryoko Nakamura on June 30, 1956, in Tokyo, Japan. As an integral part of a successful family business, Suzuki Bros. Ltd., Toru was well known and respected for the dedication and pride he held for his work. Toru loved playing sports: baseball in his younger years, followed by bowling, golf and curling. Many fond memories were cherished by Toru at Breezy Bend Country Club, Bel Acres Golf and Country Club and the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club, which he helped to rebuild after the 1972 fire. He also curled at Valour Road Curling Club. As an accomplished curler, this passion was highlighted by three consecutive Canadian Senior Men's Championships in the 1980s, earning him induction into the Manitoba and Canadian Curling Halls of Fame, 1994 and 2009 respectively. During his later years, Toru cheered for the Toronto Blue Jays and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Toru always enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends, and while volunteering with the Optimist Club of Assiniboia looked forward to their annual Buffalo BBQs. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the geriatric unit at the Grace Hospital for their compassion and care. Many thanks also to the staff at Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence and Home Care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association, 629 McDermot Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3A 1P6, or a charity of your choice.
