NORMA THORUN KRISTJANSSON (nee JOHNSON) October 29, 1926 May 27, 2012 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Norma Thorun Kristjansson after a long illness. Norma is the second oldest of six children to parents, who predeceased her, Johannes August Johnson and Bergthora Heida Sigurdson. Johannes emigrated to Canada from Iceland in 1901. Norma was predeceased by her beloved husband of 56 years, Gestur Kristjansson. Norma's siblings are Audrey Norberg deceased (Bill), Thelma Myrdal (Mundi-deceased), Joey Johnson (Verna), Herman Johnson and Lois Young (Ken). Also left to remember her wonderful spirit, courage and joy of life are her children, Heida Sigfusson (Skuli) and Gestur Kristjansson (Liz), grandchildren Freya Sigfusson (Jim McInnis), Noni Rosenblat (Dan), Kristjan Sigfusson deceased, Hunter Kristjansson, Bryce Kristjansson and great-grandchildren; Nia, and Tristan McInnis , Ryler and Charles Rosenblat. She also leaves many loving nieces and nephews. Norma grew up on the family farm in Oakview Manitoba and attended the one room Darwin Schoolhouse. She maintained a lifelong connection to her roots there and the strong work ethic she learned on the farm. Norma married Gestur Kristjansson in 1950 and after Gestur's graduation from medical school and the birth of their daughter; they spent time in Ellendale North Dakota before returning to Winnipeg. Before her marriage in 1950 Norma began working as an Executive and legal secretary at the Department of Agriculture and Immigration. She excelled in track and field and softball as a girl and she remained active at Curling and Golf as long as she was able. Norma was very active in the Community and contributed generously of her time, notably she was President of the Icelandic Canadian From in 1985, she was a Board Member of the Scandinavian Cultural Centre from 1982 -1985, she is past president of the St. Charles Country Club ladies section, she was representative of the Canadian Ladies Golf Association, Past President of the Manitoba Doctors' wives association, Secretary of the Winnipeg Winter Club Ladies Curling Section, and was Cultural Chairperson of the Icelandic National League. Norma was an accomplished chef and developed terrific skill at ponnukokur, vinerterta and skyr. She loved a good joke always turning a difficult moment into a great story we could all enjoy. She loved to dance and always tried to turn any family gathering into an occasion. Norma enjoyed her time at the family cottage at Clearwater Bay that her husband built in 1964; she was a very active curler at the Winnipeg Winter Club and golfer at St. Charles as well as spending many winters in Sun City Centre Florida with the wonderful friends she had there. Gestur did convince her to go on several adventures, including Iceland and Jamaica and trips throughout the US and Canada -and she enjoyed them but her favourite part was always getting back home to her family. A memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 8 2012 at First Lutheran Church, 580 Victor Street. We will always remember her with love. Goda nott Norma. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • As a young girl, 1 year younger than Heida Kristjansson, my dad, Alexander, would go and visit the Kristjanssons quite often as they had interests in hunting and were very good friends. I would go along and play with Heida and we always had a grand time and I found Mrs. Kristjansson to be one of the most beautiful people I had ever encountered and still feel this way today, after so many, many years have passed. She was kind, gentle, sweet-natured, a wonderful hostess and a good Mom to Heida. Both Dr. and Mrs. Kristjansson were an ideal couple as they complimented each other just by being together. I had not seen Mrs. Kristjansson for a long while but happen to see her brother, Dr. Herman Johnson, at a medical clinic about 7 years ago and asked how things were and Dr. Johnson was very quick to ask of our family's health. Such wonderful, kind and loving people and now Dr. K. has his beautiful soul-mate and partner back in his life and may they look down and see how many people are missing them. Back, when Dr. Kristjansson was killed, I happened to be in Kenora, Ontario and saw it on the front page of the newspaper and was terribly, terribly saddened as he was such a calm, caring doctor who thoroughly loved being with people and helping them. To Heida and Gestur JR and their families, I send my deepest condolensces as you deal with this very sad time as your mother and father ARE REUNITED AS THEY ARE BOTH NOW CALLED HOME TO BE WITH LOVED ONES WHO WERE CALLED EARLIER. May God Bless The Family Now and Always. I WILL REMEMBER THE FAMILY ALWAYS WITH LOVE IN MY HEART AND SADNESS ALSO AS A TEAR OR TWO FORM IN MY EYES AS I AM TYPING THIS. • Our deepest sympathy to you and your family. I remember how hard your Mom worked to raise money for the Scandinavian Centre and the turkey dinners we worked on together. She was always a pleasure to work with. - Posted by: Natalie & David Denesovych (Friend) on: Jun 03, 2012

  • We want you to know that our hearts go out to all the family in the loss of your precious one. Norma, is now in the hands of the Lord and He has His arms wrapped tightly around her. We remember what a good golfer and friend she was. Our prayers will continue to be with the family through the upcoming days and weeks. - Posted by: Spanky and Vera Thompson (Sun City Center, FL friends) on: Jun 02, 2012
