TED LIBA With heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of our husband, father and grandfather, Ted Liba, on Thursday, May 31, 2012, at the age 69 years in Winnipeg, MB. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 39 years, Pat; daughter Catherine Lys (Stephen) of Regina; daughter Kristen Chernick (Daryn) of Winnipeg; his grandchildren Alicia and Lucas Lys; sister-in-law Shirley Liba; niece Jennifer Lacombe (Dale); nephews Jeff Liba (Julie Rempel) and Chris Liba (Tania); special cousin Ron Capp; sister-in-law Diane Start (Roger) and brother-in-law Gordon Start (Bev), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Theodore and Rose Liba; his brother Peter Liba, and in-laws Douglas and Eunice Start. Ted was born in Winnipeg, MB on January 5, 1943 to Theodore and Rose Liba. He grew up in the Elmwood area and attended Elmwood High School. There he was known as a star athlete who excelled at many sports, in particular basketball and football. He made long lasting friendships there and enjoyed many years of poker games and fishing trips with this special group. After high school he went on to graduate from the Manitoba Institute of Technology with a Business Certificate. He spent time living in Saskatchewan where he met the love of his life Pat. They returned to Winnipeg and were married August 5, 1972. They raised their two daughters Catherine and Kristen in Winnipeg. Together they shared many memories and lots of love especially at the family cottage in Grindstone Provincial Park. Ted had a love of the outdoors and could often be found planting flowers in his gardens and tending to his lawn in Winnipeg and at the cottage. In 2004 he was delighted when his first grandchild Alicia was born followed by Lucas, and he became lovingly known as "Grandpa Winnipeg". He held a special place in his heart for his faithful little doggie Cali. Ted worked as Director of Human Resources at the Misericordia Hospital for 31 years. He was a very passionate worker and created many lasting friendships with co-workers from his time there. He retired in 2002. For the past eight years he has enjoyed working for the Breezy Bend Golf Course in the Canteen. He would always greet customers with his bright smile and his funny wit. Ted fought a courageous battle over the past three years with cancer and the past 10 years with heart disease. During this time he remained extremely positive. Those who knew him were amazed by his energy, his ability to keep smiling and the way he was always helping others. Funeral Service will be held Saturday, June 9 at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. His family would like to express their gratitude to all of the staff at CancerCare Manitoba in St. Boniface Hospital and Dr. Wong, and to his Cardiologist Dr. Rabson for all of their kindness and care over the years. We would like to extend a special thank-you to our neighbours Brian and Marilynn Zimmerman and to the paramedics for their courageous attempts to save his life on May 31. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044

I want to thank everyone who wrote a message here about my dad. I especially liked the one from Courtney who worked with him at Breezy Bend.... my eyes filled with tears just now reading your comment of how his eyes lit up talking about my wedding day! He is missed and will continue to be a missing link from our family for a long time :-( Thanks everyone! - Posted by: Kristen Chernick (Daughter of Ted Liba ) on: Jun 12, 2012

I first met Ted in the early 90s when he and I worked in Human Resources in Winnipeg. I remember, to this day, his outgoing personality, great sense of humour, and working together on various assignments from time to time. He always had kind words to say about the work of others around him. I was very sad to hear of Ted's passing. He will be missed. My deepest sympathies to Ted's family and friends. - Posted by: Darren Leclair (Calgary) (former business colleague) on: Jun 08, 2012

I had the pleasure of working with Ted for over 13 years. He was always quick with a smile and extremely knowledgeable in the area of Human Resources. Whenever we got together Ted could always brighten up a boardroom. He will be missed. - Posted by: Doug Machan (Aquaintance) on: Jun 08, 2012

Our Prayers to all the family, who like us feel the loss of a good man. Ted was special. He was caring and always had a beaming smile when he talked about his family. He also proudly showed and demonstrated his passion for others and his integrity in his position at the Misericordia as Human Resources Director. He walked the talk, of the Sisters and the core values of the Hospital - Caring, Respect and Trust. Ted always had time for others and inspired those he came to know. We will miss you friend, however together, we celebrate your legacy of a joyful and rewarding life. We are all Blesed. - Posted by: Ron & Cyndee Hill (Friends) on: Jun 06, 2012

Ted was a great coworker and friend. Although I've only known Ted over three golf seasons it's easy to know that he was such an amazing man with a smile that almost never left his face (even when dealing with us impatient girls around the bend). I remember the joy I saw in his eyes last summer while talking about his daughter's wedding. He was just so proud. One of my best memories, well one that will certainly stick, is how Ted lived for the soup at Breezy Bend. He took two to go cups of it each and every single day. I know it's nothing major but everytime I eat soup I will be thinking of you Ted. RIP Sweet Man - Posted by: Courtney Gordon (Coworker) on: Jun 06, 2012

I have known the liba family for over 15 years. I met Kristen in grade 7 and from there I always came over to the house and eventually was invited to the family cottage for long weekends and sometimes a few weeks at a time, and never missed boxing day with the Libas untill i moved to Calgary. Mr Liba was always a very kind and warm person who always joked around about everything and almost always beat everyone in shang-hi rummy. I cant remember how but early on he gave me a nick name of "stinky" and that name stuck around for years and years and it always made me laugh as I would say I'm too old for this nickname. Mr Liba you will be greatly missed by all. My deepest condolance goes out to Kristen and Catherine and Mrs Liba Pat. Im sorry I cannot be there this Saturday but I will be there in heart - Sending you all my love. (stinky) - Posted by: anna winiarska (a very long time family friend) on: Jun 06, 2012
