RON DALMYN It is with great sadness that the family of Ron Dalmyn announces his passing on Thursday, May 31, 2012, at Calvary Place Personal Care Home at the age of 82 years. He is reunited with his beloved wife Rose who predeceased him in February of 2010. Dad will be deeply missed by his children Tony (of Victoria, BC), Cam (Andrea), Joyce (Joe Masi), Frank (Janice) and Teresa Fleury (Gord), grandchildren Claire (of Toronto), David (of Halifax), Steven (fiancée Jayme Obendoerfer), Eric, Carly , Korey (Stu Nugent), Jennifer, Paula (Bayard deVries) and Stuart Fleury and great-grandsons Benjamin and Jackson Peterson. Dad will be lovingly remembered by his sisters Phelo (Omer) Van Wauwe of Belgium and Jo Olfers of The Netherlands, sisters-in-law Bep Dalmijn-Bos of The Netherlands and Tilly (Pierre) de Keuster of Belgium, brother-in-law Remy Lammens of the Netherlands, and many nieces and nephews, all overseas. He was predeceased by his brothers Wijnand (Melia), Alphons, Cor (Annie), Albert (Annie), and Josef (Leonie) and his sisters Nandy and Riet and his brother-in-law Eddy Olfers. After completing his mandatory service in the Royal Dutch Navy, he married the love of his life Rose in 1952, and he and Mom immigrated to Canada landing at Pier 21 in Halifax. After 18 months on a farm in Quebec, they made their way west. They spent most of their years in the family home in St. James. When Mom's Alzheimer's made it impossible for her to live safely at home, Dad visited Mom daily, and later joined her at Calvary Place in 2009, so that he could care for her, and keep her company. Dad was a very devoted husband, and in their later years nothing made him happier than bringing Mom coffee and cookies (in typical Dutch fashion). Dad was an incredibly hard worker and always supported his wife and family. A boast from Joe Verdurmen of the potential to earn one dollar ($1) per hour lured him to Winnipeg and he never turned down a job even if it meant working outside in very cold weather and/or walking several miles to get to or from work. He was very proud to have earned his Certificate in Building Estimating and even more proud when he became Superintendent of a construction company. Many bridges throughout Manitoba bear his mark. He was truly a self-made man! In his later years he took annual hunting trips with his sons and took pride in loading his own shells. He became a passionate environmentalist and started The Organization. He became computer literate and emailed and webcammed with relatives overseas. He enjoyed time with his Dutch friends the Nieuwenburgs, Ruigroks, Kuypers, and the Verdurmens. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and insisted on taking them to every park in the neighbourhood. They all knew that he made french fries on Fridays, and no one ever left his home without having an ice cream cone. Dad could build or fix anything, and recycled every possible item long before recycling was fashionable (yes, he even straightened every nail)! The little house on King Edward was expanded front, back and up as the children grew. Every room in the house boasted built-in cupboards and shelves. He always planted a vegetable garden and of course a flower garden for Mom. All of the children always had a bicycle and all learned how to play soccer. Dad was still playing soccer with Joyce's university friends and his children and grandchildren in the 80s, and impressing the neighbourhood kids with his fancy foot work shortly before moving into Calvary Place. Mom and Dad always went to mass at St. Ann's on Saturdays, and were sure to give a ride to several of the parish ladies. Dad was legendary for his great sense of humour, and always had a joke to circulate. The family wishes to thank the staff at Calvary Place for their wonderful and loving care of our dad, especially Bonita, Don, Edison, Carolin, Helmut and all of the staff on 2 South. We also wish to thank Sr. Alice for her frequent visits. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Recreation Department of Calvary Place PCH (1325 Erin St., Winnipeg, MB, R3E 3R6), or a charity of your choice, would be appreciated. Cremation has taken place. Funeral mass will be held on Friday, June 8, 2012, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church, 271 Hampton Street, in Winnipeg, with Msgr. Moore presiding. Please join us for lunch immediately after mass. Private family interment will take place later in the day. Non est ei similis There is no one like him Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.mb.ca 885-9715

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I attended St. Ann's school with several of the Dalmyn children and knew the family well. Mr. Dalmyn was a very good friend to our family. He helped my parents build an addition to our house on Brooklyn St. so we could have a back entry during the winter and an extra bedroom for our large family. My parents were very grateful for Mr. Dalmyn's help. He always had a smile on his face and was quick with a joke to lighten everyone's day. My mother used to also attend Border Community Club bingo sessions with Rose Dalmyn and looked forward to this outing every week. I wish to provide sincere condolences from the McLellan clan to the Dalmyn family. We will miss Ron Dalmyn. - Posted by: Jim McLellan (Friend of Family) on: Jun 08, 2012

  • My condolences to Joyce and Joe, and to the entire family. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time. Sincerely, Russ - Posted by: Russ Wyatt (Friend) on: Jun 08, 2012
