Bernice was predeceased by her parents Catherine and Andrew Tolpa, sister Jean Vien, and a sister Helen in infancy. Verna or Bernice, Grandma or Auntie Bee to her family and friends was born and lived most of her life in Winnipeg. Met her soulmate and best friend Steve at a barn dance at Logan and Keewatin. She was a stay at home Mom raising four children. She loved to garden (prize winning flowers) and was an awesome cook. Many family gatherings were held at the Sleeva home, which brought her much joy. Bernice's knitting and handicrafts were delightful presents for the entire family and friends. She was a devoted Catholic and attended St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral faithfully. She will be missed by all who knew her. The family would like to thank Dr. Balko her family doctor of many years. We would also like to thank her home care workers Christina, José, and Clothelde for their kindness and help. Also we would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the paramedics and emergency staff at St. Boniface Hospital. • My heartfelt sympathies to Mr. Sleeva and family. I grew up across the road from Steve and Bernice in Lockport. Whenever my Mom couldn't find me in the house or in our yard, she knew exactly where to look. I could always be found stealing peas and raspberries from Mrs. Sleeva's garden, helping her put food colouring in her fountain, learning about the beautiful flowers she had in her yard, or swinging on her "monkey chair" in the sunroom. She made the best ice cream cones because she always hid chocolate treats in the bottom. I just reminded my Mom of this a week or two ago when she was making a cone for my nephew. Bernice always snuck me a glass of Mr. Sleeva's "Beep" juice, and he'd tease me when he arrived home from work and caught me drinking it. And who could forget the frogs! I can't even imagine how many times I must've counted those things all over the house! Although they left the neighbourhood a long time ago, I have never stopped thinking about the Sleevas and fondly remembering spending time with them. Rest in peace, Mrs. Sleeva. -Dineen (Polson) Gagnon - Posted by: Dineen (Polson) Gagnon (Former Neighbour) on: Jun 10, 2012

  • “I met an Angel one day.” Even though Cathy and I have been together for 30 yrs I only got to see Cathy’s mother a few times, us living in BC, Steve and Bernice in Manitoba. The times I did see them were very memorable, Bernice was always smiling and she had this beautiful laugh. This is all so very sad, she was pure innocence. An earthly angel returns to heaven. My heart goes out to all of the Sleeva family. I will always remember Bernice. Michael R.
