ISABEL MAY HOVEY It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Isabel May Hovey at the Poseidon Bay Nursing Home on June 2, 2012 at the age of 89. She will be missed and lovingly remembered by Anne Caunt and family as well as friends in England; in Canada Jean and her family, Leslie and Michael, special friends Elsie and Lee, and many others. Isabel was born August 24, 1922 in Kington, England, living there throughout the Second World War period. Educated as a nurse in Birmingham, she worked in London, England as a Registered Nurse and Midwife. In 1956 she came to Canada, settled in Winnipeg, she worked during the polio epidemic at the Municipal Hospitals, now known as Riverview. Then after attending the University of Manitoba, she worked as a Public Health Nurse for the City of Winnipeg Health Department for 32 years. As a health professional, she was a valued and respected colleague, generous and insightful; she worked tirelessly to improve the health and well being of her clients. Isabel enjoyed life. Anything British was always just right. She travelled extensively south of the border; Hawaii, Europe and of course England which was visited every three to four years. She also enjoyed showing Canada to her visitors from England. Her other hobbies were a cat named Thomasina, and later on a dog named Charlie. Opera, theatre, reading and gardening were her other passions. She was a good friend to all at work and privately. A special thanks to the caregivers at Poseidon Bay, the enriching Recreational Department, and all those who gave Isabel loving care. A Celebration of Life in memory of Isabel will be held at a later date. In honour of Isabel's love for animals, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society. Mom and Dad (Sylvia and Ron Oxenbury) met Isabel when they moved to Winnipeg from England in 1954. Mom was also a nurse and met Isabel at work. They remained close friends throughout their lives although it has been some years since they saw each other. Isabel was my Godmother and came to Ottawa for my wedding in 1993. She was a very special lady and we have special memories of Isabel. - Posted by: Sandra Morin (sandramorin@rogers.com) (Goddaughter) on: Jun 25, 2012

Isabel was a great friend of my mum Joan (Sherwood) Albertson and was my godmother. She visited our family many times and we shared a great love of all animals - especially cats and horses. Our family is deeply saddened by her loss but her memory remains with us. - Posted by: Carol-Anne Albertson (God Daughter) on: Jun 11, 2012

“Auntie” Isobel was a good friend to my mother (who also came from England) and to me she was my Auntie Isobel. It was always wonderful to spend time with Isobel at her apartment along with Thomasina and in later years, a few summer weeks at her home. We moved away from Manitoba but Isobel still came to see us in Calgary, Toronto, Florida and I last saw her in Hawaii. It was always exciting for me to see her. Unfortunately, we lost touch and my father and I were unsuccessful in our attempts at locating Isobel. My father, Bert Albertson and I will always remember her kindness, generosity, humour and love of animals. Isobel will always be a part of my memories and I am deeply saddened by her passing. - Posted by: Susan Albertson, Bert Albertson (family friend ) on: Jun 10, 2012
