DOROTHEA BEATRICE GETSCHEL (nee DUNCAN) Dorothea Getschel passed away peacefully on a warm, calm summer evening with family and friends at her side at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg June 3, 2012. Dorothea was in her 90th year. She is survived by her brother Lorne Robert Duncan, niece Gwenyth Kotowich and nephews Donald and Gordon Duncan. Preceded by her beloved husband Ernie Getschel (June 1979). Dorothea was born at the family home in Winnipeg on December 11, 1922 during a fierce winter blizzard. Upon graduating from St. John's High School with Honours Dorothea entered the business world with a Diploma from Success Business College. Her zeal for academic achievement overcame her desire to work in the business world and she entered the University of Manitoba in 1945 and she later graduated with a Degree in Chemistry in 1949. After graduating Dorothea was employed by Ashdown's, the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Manitoba and Fisher Chemicals (Toronto and Edmonton). While in Edmonton she met her husband to be, Ernie Getschel, and they were joyously married on April 27, 1963 in Winnipeg. True to her roots she left her position in Edmonton in 1963 to return to her home city of Winnipeg. Her first work assignments in Winnipeg were a Lab assistant at Sisler High School and a commercial instructor at Vincent Massey. These two experiences ignited her passion to teach so in 1965 to 1966 she returned to the University of Manitoba and received her Teaching Certificate. She began her formal teaching career at Sisler High School (mathematics and typing) in 1966. While at Sisler High School she had the unique experience of team teaching with her father. She was very proud to be working side by side with her father and loved every moment of the experience. She transferred to Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute in 1976 (mathematics) where she stayed until her retirement in 1988. Dorothea was fortunate enough to have travelled extensively through-out Europe, Asia, New Zealand, Australia, North America and the Caribbean. Travelling was a passion for Dorothea that truly enriched her life and filled her shelves with many photographs and souvenirs. She enjoyed gardening, photography, swimming, crafts, sewing, reading and cards. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by family, friends and her companions from the Oval Table Luncheon. A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 15 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.mb.ca 885-9715

  • I have not known Dorothea long, but truly enjoyed our talks, hugs and laughs. She was the first person my Mother and I met at Briarwood House, where she teased us with telling us that 'we would ask for a glass of water, but she would ask for a glass of H20' - with a glint in her eye and pride in her heart of her roots. She was a lovely spirit who touched my heart. I know my Mom will miss her company at meal time too. - Posted by: Gerrie Ramsay (my Mom was a house-mate at Rosewood) on: Jun 15, 2012
