In 1948, Harry and his parents emigrated from Germany to Canada living first on a farm in Saskatchewan and then moving to Winnipeg in 1949. Harry met Margarete when both of their families lived in the same community in Saskatchewan. Harry and Margarete were married at the First Mennonite Church on July 5, 1952. Harry was always interested in automobiles. He turned that interest into a career and graduated from trade school as a licensed mechanic. In 1955 Harry and his brother-in-law Henry Sudermann went into business together by opening an Esso service station and automobile repair shop at Sargent and Alverstone. In 1962 they moved the business to Simcoe and Notre Dame where it was renamed Simcoe Motors. In 1977 Harry left the automotive repair business and embarked on a new career as a real estate agent with Block Bros. Many summers were spent camping in a small tent at various lakes in Manitoba. In 1972 Dad and Mom purchased a cottage at West Hawk Lake where they spent many enjoyable summers with extended family. One of Dad's hobbies was photography. He was an avid photographer and one of his special interests was wedding photography. Dad was honoured to be the wedding photographer for a number of family and friends. Dad also liked traveling. Dad and Mom traveled to Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico and Hawaii. Dad especially liked Hawaii and spending time on the beach with mom. Dad suffered through a number of strokes and always made a remarkable recovery. Later in life when he was confined to a wheelchair, Dad still dreamed of traveling and wished to return to his childhood neighbourhood in the Ukraine. He will be greatly missed by his wife and family. I would remember Garry as long as my memory serves me. He has done a biggest favour to me anyone could do to a newcomer over 48 years old - using his network of friends he helped me to get my first job in Canada. I was a complete stranger to him at that time, but I felt myself like I was his the dearest loving relative. I was introduced to his big family later and understood what a wonderful people I have met. Garry was indeed a very good man. Garry and his lovely and caring wife Margarete were lucky to have each other and their family members were lucky to have such a great dad, granddad, uncle... My deep condolences to his wife Margarete and to all his big family members. Vladimir Shvetsov - Posted by: Vladimir Shvetsov (Friend) on: Jul 13, 2012

Good bye, dear Mr.Harry Toews! A few days I'm trying to say "Good Bye" to our Uncle Harry . He was the Husband, the Father, the Grandfather, the Great-grandfather, the cousin, the uncle, the friend ... For our Family he was dear Uncle by the relationship.. but we ALWAYS were feeling a lot more. He was like our Father for us and Grandfather for our sons. He was a dear friend for us, he was a business partner. He was blessing for us. He made a place inside his big heart for us when we came to Canada from Ukraine in 1996. We were staying in his house first month, he did show Winnipeg for us. He made a great choice for the schools for our children. He helped with our first apartment, with our first house, with our first car... We always will remember how many great Family dinners we had together with his beautiful Family. How many wonderful weekends we had at his cottage together. He did teach our boys how to do water-skiing. He was visiting us in Fargo when we moved from Winnipeg . Just last October we was planning visit us in Florida. And he always was interested in his native city Dnepropetrovsk. He amazingly remember all streets in the city of his childhood. Uncle Harry always met us with big hug and always was talking Russian language to please me. His VERY big heart made a room for our friends when they came to Winnipeg too. Dear Uncle Harry helped to his 2 cousins in Ukraine, whom he didn't see 70 years ! You are very missed, dear Uncle Harry. We will always remember you. You did teach us to love Family, to love People. - Posted by: Liudmila Tevs (Niece or adopted daughter ??) on: Jun 27, 2012
