• Dearest Jeannette and Family: How we loved and appreciated you and your family in our church and University of Regina life. Joe was such a fine human being. What a blessing he was to so many people whether it was being a teacher, a leader, or a friend. How we thank God for all the times he shared. We wish you all - God's peace. Bless you. • On behalf of the Canadian Mennonite Board and myself, I want to extend condolences to you, Keith and to Jeanette, and the family. Surely this is a big loss in your life. We pray that God's sustaining grace and comfort will bring you peace through this experience. Joe was a wise and loving counsellor both to me and to the board during the past five years he served with us. He was so supportive of me as a newcomer to the Canadian scene and would often just ring me up to chat during my workday. I always enjoyed those conversations immensely. He had a way of making you feel a great deal taller as you talked. On the board he was gracious with his remarks in many a deliberation and a very feeling person when it came to controversy and tension. I am so grateful I had a chance to talk with him about the wonderful contribution he made to the publication as it won the highest award given by the Canadian Church Press at its annual awards dinner in May. He, along with other writers, tackled the sensitive subject of mental health in such a way that our fellow professionals in the field recognized it as a very helpful discussion for the church to have. I called Joe immediately after winning the award and congratulated him on his/our accomplishment. Since his email wasn't working properly I then followed up with a copy of the article we ran in the publication. He was overjoyed, but in his characteristic way, was also humbled. I will miss those telephone chats enormously. They always graced my working day. May he rest in peace, a peace he has earned through many years of service and dedication. And I'm sure the family will feel keenly the vacancy in your many gatherings. • Jeanette and family: Our prayers and thoughts are with you. Joe was our teacher at RJC, but what we remember most was when you taught the marriage enrichment course at Grace in Regina. • Joe was a much loved brother to me. We visited by phone regularly on Sunday mornings. Memories of his early teaching days in a nearby rural Alberta school, and living at home on the family farm are vivid and memorable. He had time for a kid brother. Our work years were separated by many miles, and in retirement we visited mainly by phone. Much of our conversation was about family, life, and sports. • We'd like to recognize Joe for his many contributions to so many endeavors. Joe was a constant steadying presence that was appreciated very much when we were younger and into the current time. His faithfulness and calm way of managing in times of success or stress was an example to many.
