HUBERT HENRE JOSEPH DEVION (Nicknames Babe and Hughy) June 18, 1923 - June 27, 2012 Peacefully on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 a golden heart stopped beating at the Grace Hospital at the age of 89. Hubert was predeceased by his lifelong companion Muriel (Robson), his sisters Bertha, Helen and brothers Henri, Joseph, Omer, Albert and Arthur. He leaves to cherish his memory a special friend Edna, many nieces and nephews, as well as close friends. Hubert served in the Second World War. He was a dedicated employee of the T Eaton Company throughout his working career. Hubert enjoyed many years at his cottage at Winnipeg Beach. He was an avid bowler in two leagues, liked fishing, golfing, hunting, occasionally going to the casino, and cheering on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. A special thanks to Grant and Carol for their ongoing support, the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Services and the Grace Hospital Emergency staff for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba. A celebration of Hubert's life will be held on Thursday, July 5, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. His memory will live forever in our hearts. Uncle Babe Uncle Babe was my Great Uncle. I came to know him originally as a member of a colourful cast of characters brought to life in my Dad's stories about growing up in St. Boniface. That was until Babe sent a box of reel to reel tape recordings over to my Toronto home studio, on suggestion of my Dad, and asked if I could transfer them to modern media, as they were 40 years old and falling apart! These recordings were of a 1962 concert of the La Verendrye Band led by my Grandpa Hank Devion. Uncle Babe and his brothers were members of the band. The band was fantastic! I was able to record these wonderful recordings to digital and CD. Uncle Babe was very pleased with the result, especially being able to listen to the music on modern equipment without fear of it possibly being the last time! We spoke on the phone afterwards for a very long time and found much in common, as musicians often do. I discovered Uncle Babe to be thoughtful, bright, funny and full of life. He had a sharp memory and a flair for telling tales. It was a gift for me to be given the opportunity to get to know him on this level and it brought us both joy. I always enjoyed our back yard conversations and listening to Hughie tell me about his time in the war, his bicycle racing when he was a teenager, the stolen firewood story, his jokes, stories about his nephews he spoke fondly about and so many, many other great conversations we had. I had gotten to know him over the past five years and he was the best neighbour a person could have and he became a very good friend as well. He was always willing to lend me a hand when I needed help with minor yard and house repairs, like a Dad to me in those ways.
