ROBERT SCHULZ Peacefully, with his family by his side, Robert Schulz passed away on Friday, July 6, 2012, at Concordia Hospital at the age of 85 years. He is survived by his loving and faithful wife of 61 years, Tina; three daughters: Irene and Rudy Derksen, Elsie and Jake Ginter, and Karen and John Dyck; eight grandchildren: Caroline, Laura and Christine Derksen; Phillip Dyck, Kimberley Dyck with great- grandchildren Kyla and Zachery, and Lindsay Dyck; Paul Ginter with wife Amanda, Karl Ginter with wife Tara and great-granddaughter Hannah; one brother Otto and Hedwig Schulz, and family, his sister Linda's three sons, and two sisters Hilda and Agnes, and family in Germany. He will also be missed by his three sisters-in law, Anny Stein, Kaethe Wiebe and Olga Wiebe. Robert Schulz was born on April 9, 1927, in Solodrie, Ukraine. During the Second World War he fled with many others to Poland, Germany and finally to Holland. From here he was assisted by MCC to relocate and begin a new life in Paraguay. The years spent here were hard but he and many others managed to build a new community in Volendam. It was here that he met and fell in love with Tina Wiebe and they were married on June 17, 1951. The family grew with the arrival of Irene in 1952 and Elsie in 1953. After seven years the opportunity came to emigrate to Canada and they arrived in Winnipeg in February 1954. In 1956, a third daughter, Karen, was born and the family was complete. Robert was a man who worked hard and in Canada he began his career in the construction industry. The adjustments to a new language, climate and culture were difficult but he learned the skills needed on the job and became a contractor.Schulz Roofing Lathing Ltd. Together with his wife Tina, he built up his business and built not only the homes he lived in, but built homes for others. He was always conscious of building with quality workmanship. He worked long hours, often six days a week, but Sundays were for Church, family time and visiting with friends. Grand Beach was a favourite destination in the summer. In 1973, Robert realized his dream of owning a cottage, when he purchased one at Lee River. He spent many happy years here with his family and provided his children and grandchildren with wonderful experiences waterskiing, picking blueberries, fishing off the dock or roasting marshmallows. Robert also enjoyed travelling and visited many placesHawaii, Mexico, Europe, Ghana and Cuba. In March 2010, Robert suffered a stroke. Even though he made a fairly good recovery his life was changed. After 32 years in their home on Reiny Drive, they found a new home and community at Cornerstone. Robert was baptized as an infant into the Lutheran faith and joined the Mennonite Church in Volendam in 1951. He has been a long time and faithful member of North Kildonan Mennonite Church and has contributed where he could throughout these many years. We as a family would like to express our gratitude to the staff at Concordia Hospital, for their kind and compassionate care of Robert. Also, we deeply appreciate the pastoral care given to us by Don and Kathleen Rempel Boschman. We love you DadAufwiedersehen! A celebration of Robert's life will take place at North Kildonan Mennonite Church, 1131 Roch Street, on Wednesday July 11, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. Viewing will take place prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mennonite Central Committee, 134 Plaza Drive, Winnipeg, MB R3T 5K9.
