ELIZABETH FRANCES BUCK As lightning flashed and thunder rumbled, Betty Buck, with family at her side, passed away in the early morning, at the Victoria General Hospital, Winnipeg, on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 at the age of 94. She was predeceased by her parents, Frank Self and Alice Hickey, siblings Hugh, Nancy, Lawrence, Joyce and Roy, and by her husband, the Rev. James M. Buck. Her memory will be cherished by her sister Dorothy, her sons Robert, Ken (Penny), Richard (Bruce), daughter Joanne (Aden), sons Paul (Laurie) and David (Melissa), her grandchildren Tracey (Jasen), Carrie (Darren), Allison (Ray), Stephanie, Trevor, James (Julie), Jason (Manon), Geoffrey (Kim), Candace (Rick), Steven (Lori) and Lisa (Art), special friends Ryan and Diane, and her great-grandchildren Andrew, Lauren, Dawson, Taryn, Atlen, Ada, Noah, Finnegan (2 weeks old) and Archer. Betty was born March 22, 1918 at Keddleston, SK to Frank and Alice Self - her father died before she was born - and her mother married Bert Hickey, who was a widower with three children. She grew up on a farm near Bethune, SK, during the depression and completed her high school education in Regina. She married the Rev. James M. Buck on December 6, 1939 in Bethune, SK and became the wife of an Anglican minister. Together they raised six children and at age 55, Betty took her LPN training in Winnipeg and began a 12 year nursing career at Virden hospital. She moved to Winnipeg in 1996 to be closer to family. She loved her little apartment at Arden House and helped with the seniors activities. She attended St. Mary Magdalene Church and was active on the Altar Guild and sang in the choir almost until her passing. She moved to Catherine Place in St. Boniface in 2005 and organized the shuffleboard program and card games and helped new residents settle in and gave office staff helpful ideas for improving the facility. She had travelled to Egypt with her Jim and later to England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland with Richard and Joanne. She also made it to Hawaii. She talked to her African Violets and knitted countless cuddly teddy bears to send to Doctors without Borders . She pushed the armchair exercise program and got many residents more active. At 94 we referred to her as our energizer bunny . Funeral service will be held on Monday, July 9, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Mary Magdalene Church, #3 St. Vital Rd., Winnipeg, MB. Interment will be at Oak Lake Cemetery on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. with reception at Oak Lake Legion Hall. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff on Unit 4 South, Victoria Hospital, for their kindness and compassionate care. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 1160-675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 9Z9 or to the Parish of St. Mary Magdalene, #3 St. Vital Rd., Winnipeg, MB. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • We always looked forward to mom Buck's visits to Ottawa. She always had us smiling and laughing with her stories. Her positive energy was contagious. Betty will sadly be missed. Love Cheryl and Nat - Posted by: Cheryl and Nat (friends of Paul and Laurie Buck) on: Jul 08, 2012

  • She lived above me at Arden House, and was very active in our small Seniors group. I would see her when I visited my aunt at Catherine Place and she was always busy. When I saw her after she fallen and broke her collar bone a few years ago, I asked her what she had been doing, her answer was 'running'. She lived a very good life and she will be missed. - Posted by: Merle Tochor (Friend from Arden House) on: Jul 08, 2012
