ELIZABETH CLEMENTINE BROWN (STEPHEN) December 26, 1926 - May 31, 2012 Clem's journey on this earth ended on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital in Nanaimo, BC after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was 85 years old. Clem leaves to mourn her loving children, Deborah Claire Nicol and Stephen Richard Brown (Cyndi), granddaughters, Amber Nicol-Scott (Steve) and Courtenay Nicol, great-grandchildren Callum, Claire and Anna Scott. She also will be missed by sisters-in-law Doreen Smith, Beverly Thiessen (Harry) as well as numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. Clem was predeceased by her loving husband of 44 years, Delmer Clare Brown in 1994, her parents, Annie and James Stephen and her sister-in-law Marguerite Brown and brother-in-law Ralph Smith. Clem was born in Letellier, Manitoba and raised as an only child on her parents' farm. Her parents came to Canada from Scotland, so she enjoyed her Scottish heritage as well as the French Canadian influence from the surrounding community. Clem graduated from High School in Letellier and went to Normal School in Winnipeg and graduated in 1947 at Knox United Church. With her teaching diploma she taught in a one room school house at Shannon, Manitoba with 15 students teaching Grades one to six. In 1949 on July 13 she married Delmer Clare Brown from Roland, Manitoba. She and Del lived in many places throughout Del's career in the Royal Canadian Air Force, which took them to France, Vancouver, Saskatoon and Winnipeg starting from the small Air Force Base in Rivers, Manitoba. They had two children, Deborah Claire and Stephen Richard. Clem went to work in 1965 at the Hudson's Bay Drapery department in Winnipeg, where she worked part time until 1986, when she retired. Del and Clem moved to Parksville, BC in 1988 and enjoyed many holidays both locally and abroad. Clem had many hobbies to add beauty to everyone's life with her gardening, quilting and knitted objects of love. Her great-grandchildren, Callum, Claire and Anna will miss their Grannie B with her ready smile and welcoming hugs. Her big heart and willingness to lend a hand was a gift that all enjoyed. A memorial service was held at Knox United Church in Parksville, BC on Thursday, June 14, 2012. A celebration of Clem's life will be held on Friday, July 13, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens at 4000 Portage Avenue in Winnipeg followed by the interment of her ashes. She will be reunited with Del on what would have been their 63rd wedding anniversary. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society in Clem's name would be very much appreciated.
