Born: Apr 22, 1920
Date of Passing: Jul 12, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHUGH (BILL) ARCHIBALD MACDIARMID April 22, 1920 July 12, 2012 After a brief illness, Hugh passed away with family by his side at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. Hugh was a pillar of strength for his wife Wynn and will be missed beyond words by Wynn, their five children Bill (Ruth), Don (Lois), Anne (Bob), Jean (Steve) and Archie, nine grandchildren Paul (Darla), Dana, Sara (Chris), Lauren (Jason), Arran, Kevin (Lindsay), Jenny, Samantha and Alex and 11 great-grandchildren. He was extremely proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and delighted in their accomplishments. Hugh joined the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals and was accepted into the army in 1940. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel before completing his service and returning to Winnipeg. During his time overseas, he corresponded with Wynn for several years before returning to Winnipeg where they married in 1946. He studied at the University of Manitoba where he graduated from Electrical Engineering and went on to work as an instructor at the University of Manitoba for 25 years. Hugh continued to work in Winnipeg with several architectural and engineering firms and as a private consultant. During this time, he worked on a wide variety of buildings and facilities and left his mark across Manitoba. He relished being retained for his technical expertise as an expert witness in court. Hugh was a fountain of knowledge and loved to read, learned four languages, and retained everything he could about birds and animals. In 1960, he and Wynn bought a lot at Star Lake in the Whiteshell and built the family cottage where countless cherished memories were made. He enjoyed everything cottage life had to offer and being surrounded by nature. Hugh had an exceptional work ethic and tackled any task no matter how big or complex. In the course of his life he touched everyone he met with his kindness, generosity and wisdom. He loved to laugh and laughed often; his stories and sayings will be passed on for generations within his family. Cremation has taken place. At Hugh's request, private celebration of his life will take place at Chapel Lawn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre in Iles des Chenes Manitoba or to a charity of your choice. Tributes to his life may be made at www.passages.winnipegfreepress.com . Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.mb.ca 885-9715

Wynn & Jean & family, I was saddened to hear of Hugh's passing. Though I haven't seen him for several years, I remember fondly what an important member of the congregation he was at SCUC. I especially have fond memories of his presence, sense of direction & purpose and his calming influence when we worked together on the Building Committee after the fire. I'm thinking that Heaven was in need of some Electrical upgrades and God knew who to call. Sincerest sympathies. - Posted by: Allen Nixon () on: Jul 18, 2012

I met Hugh first as my Electrical Prof, then years later as a co-worker in the engineering design world. A unique character by any measure with life stories that would take an average person 3 lifetimes to experience. Thanks for everything Hugh. - Posted by: Joe Lucas () on: Jul 16, 2012

We had the privilege of meeting Mr. MacDiarmid only a few short months ago. It's not everyday you meet someone that you feel you've known a life time. We will always cherish that brief moment in time. Prayers and blessings to this dear family. Your father, grandfather and husband was a lovely man. I had the occasion to come to know both Mr. and Mrs. Macdiarmid (and some of his family) when I worked as the Executive Director of Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence. He was a lovely man. Informed, articulate, refined and educated. And how he cared about Mrs. MacDiarmid. They were a lovely couple and it was my privilege to come to know them. He and I often had the occasion to chat when he sat in the lobby. I so enjoyed all his stories from his years at the university. He will be missed. - Posted by: Vivian Bicknell () on: Jul 14, 2012
