ANDRE BERNIER Our beloved husband, father, grandpa, son, brother passed away peacefully at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach on July 11, 2012, surrounded by family and friends after a lengthy illness at the age of 64. André is survived by Lynne, his wife of 40 years, his children Dana Bernier (Doug), Michael (Leslie), Giselle (Cory) Szczepanski, Ryan, and his five grandchildren; his mother Delia (nee Meilleur) and his 14 siblings Gerald (Sue), Lionel (Pat), Claude (Evonne), David (Darlene), Paulette (Jack) Mann, Jocelyne (Jon) Slough, Carmelle (Clifford) Stodgell, Noella (Brian) Rudge, Marc (Joyce), Nicole (Ron) Gagaluk, Paul Jr. (Helen), Laurent (Linda), Richard (Diane) and Michelle (Terry) Truthwaite and numerous nieces and nephews; as well as Jean Bouchard, his good friend and confidant. He was predeceased by his father Paul and his infant sister Marie. André was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba, on November 24, 1947. André was a dedicated family man who loved camping with his family and was involved in all his children's sports. André was competitive in horseshoes and curling as well as being an accomplished umpire both locally and provincially. André was also a hard working employee at Metal Pac where he worked for 40 years. Many thanks to all those who performed such acts of kindness with a visit, a hug, or a kind word. Viewing and a celebration of his life will be held at Notre Dame de Lorette Parish in Lorette on Tuesday, July 17 at 10:00 a.m., with lunch to follow. My sincere sympathy to all in the Bernier and Meilleur family. My thoughts are with you Carmelle, Estelle, Gilbert. I can only remember all the singing and dancing 3 days long at Carmelle's wedding. I was blessed to know Andre from my earliest days, and to have him as a role model. He loved books, was interested in everything in and beyond the universe, and we always had wonderful conversations about new things he was learning. He was smart, but also was a very calm, sensible, wise, and spiritual person, a rare combination. It was an honour for me to have him as godfather to my daughter. But Andre was also full of fun at family events. I will never forget one time when I was his partner at cards, we bid Barouche and made it, thanks to his skill. He liked to tease, although he was never malicious. I will always cherish memories of him, his gentle good humour, and his guiding influence as a Christian family man. My everlasting Kodak moment of Andre was taken through my eyes on January 2, 2012 and will always be imbedded in my mind. My parents (Auray & Simonne Meilleur) had hosted a New Year’s card party in their heated garage where many family and friends had come out to enjoy. Later that evening, the guests had retreated in my parents’ home where some had continued in conversation and others joined in songs with Father Paul. But not everyone had left the comfort of the garage as I stood in the doorway and observed Andre, Lynne, their children and grandchildren playing the newly learned board game “Sequence”. The memory I have seeing Andre enjoying every moment alone with his family will never leave me. Louise and I are saddened to learn of Andre's passing! Our deepest sympathies go to Lynne and his entire family. Andre and I (Walter) had our start in curling during our high school years. Teams were made by drawing names out of a hat. I was fortunate to be drawn as the third on Andre's team. We got into the final of the first event. The rink was a two sheet, natural ice challenge. At that time the games were 12 ends. We were on sheet one, down four with the hammer, coming home. So early in Andre's curling forays, he knew no quitting! We were curling against a team that was skipped by one of the popular guys in our school. Needless to say we knew where we stood on the food chain of high school student body hierarchy. As the end unfolded, the opposing skip missed both his shots, succumbing to the challenge of the pressure and the ice. Andre had ONLY to draw the 12 foot for FIVE to win the game. Undaunted, Andre, Jeff Stoughten like, completed the unbelievable victory. Thank you Andre for this wonderful TSN moment in my life of curling's ups and downs!
