BRUCE MARTIN It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Bruce Randall Martin on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at home, surrounded by the love of his family, after a courageous two year battle with cancer. Bruce is survived by his brothers Chris Martin (Joyce) and Richard Middleton (Debbie); sister Leslie Middleton (Alan); children Jacquelyn Cooney (Nathan), Christopher Martin; Sarah Martin (Gabriel); and the love of his life, Libby MacTavish. He was predeceased by his mother and father, and by his brother David. On August 14, 1952, Bruce was born in Winnipeg to Marjorie Middleton and William John Martin. The middle child among siblings David, Chris, Leslie and Richard, Bruce grew up on Rosedale Avenue and attended Lord Roberts School, Deer Lodge Junior High, Churchill High, and St. James Collegiate. His wide array of interests and love of history and reading made for a knowledgeable, wise man. His interests included Canadian History, boxing, film, and astronomy, and his dream job was to be a geologist. He loved listening to the music of The Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Cream, Mamas and the Papas, The Band, and many other blues and reggae artists. Bruce worked as a painter and interior decorator for most of his life, and said he knew it was the job he wanted since he had first helped paint a house when he was a child. After purchasing property in Negril, Jamaica in 1984, Bruce fell in love with the Caribbean lifestyle and reggae music, and regularly spent his winters there. In 1992 Bruce married Libby in Jamaica, and lived together with their two children in their home on Ferndale Avenue. Bruce's three children Jacquelyn, Christopher, and Sarah were immense sources of pride for him, with the past year especially full of proud moments, including Jackie's Jeopardy audition, Chris' graduation from the University of Wolverhampton in England, and Sarah's first theatre performance. One of Bruce's favourite pastimes was taking the two family dogs, Samson and Elliot, for long walks at Maple Grove Park. A devoted friend, many of the friends Bruce met in elementary school and junior high were friends for life, including his best friend Charlie Johnson. He had many friends with whom he kept contact for years, namely his Monday Group who ate at the Evergreen Restaurant together weekly, his dear friend Elliot Goszer, and many more with whom he shared countless laughs. Bruce's sharp sense of humour was one of his qualities that was evident in all that he did. He loved pulling pranks on coworkers, telling jokes, and just laughing at life. Bruce was often a good source of advice to those who needed it, and was always willing to talk over coffee or some lunch. He will always be known to us as someone who was there whenever you needed him, and was always very willing to help out. On Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at 1:00 p.m., Bruce's Funeral Service will be held in Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Road. Donations in Bruce's memory may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or to the Canadian Liver Foundation.

I am deeply saddened by this news. I found out today about Bruce from a mutual friend. I currently live in Vancouver and was hoping to meet up with Bruce during my short stay in Winnipeg. There are not enough words to say about how Bruce helped me and was a consistent companion while I lived in Winnipeg. He is an example and a valued friend that will be missed. If anyone is able to share if Bruce has a resting place I'd appreciate an opportunity to say good-bye. Thanks for everything my friend, Huf M - Posted by: Huf (Friend) on: Nov 21, 2012

Having been away, I missed Bruce's announcement and, ever so sadly, his service. Our heartfelt condolences to Libby and family. Bruce was a 'character' like none other but he taught me a great deal during the times I was fortunate enough to spend with him. - Posted by: Gord McNaught (friend) on: Jul 27, 2012

I am so grateful to have broken bread with Bruce just a few weeks before he passed. Interestingly enough was that I had left Wpg on Sunday after my first visit on Friday of the long weekend when my truck mysteriously broke down forcing me to stay a few more days to wait for repairs allowing me a second and final visit with Bruce and Libby on Tuesday. I picked up the truck and left Wednesday back to Edmonton. Funny thing was that there wasn't anything wrong with the truck except a slightly loose relay switch which hasn't acted up since or before. Bruce was a close friend, confidant and business associate as we've collaborated on many projects. He certainly helped me out on a personal and professional many times. I'll miss you my friend, till we meet again and my prayers are with your family at this difficult time......Lenny G - Posted by: Lenny Graceffo (Friend) on: Jul 22, 2012

I was saddened to hear of Bruce's passing! As I continue to walk the path of sobriety, I always remember that my start after treatment was attending a big book study at Bruce & Charlie's place in St. James! He gave me the gift of learning to laugh and find joy in the companionship of sober living! We walked to see the Canada day fireworks after the group and I was given the gift of having a sense of awe restored to me! It is a true loss to the fellowships and his family and friends that he should pass so young! Sincerely LarryK - Posted by: Larry Kobyll (Recovery friend) on: Jul 20, 2012

Dear Bruce will always be remembered with love by Libby's family, Don, Rob, Gwen, James, Alison, Amanda, and Andrea. Bruce's sense of humour especially remains in our hearts and so fondly remembered with special times such as playing Christmas "Craniuim" .. a board game that became tradition with us. His neice's and nephew always remarked how truly funny he was, and so entertaining and great to be around! Bruce was an avid reader and could remark and tell stories on any subject. Bruce was kind...a good and generous man. He is someone that is dearly missed and at last at peace now. Our sincerest condolences to Bruce's family and friends. - Posted by: Al Amada and Andrea ( Libby's family) on: Jul 20, 2012

Bruce somehow always managed to miss our family get togethers, until the last couple years, when we finally got to know him. I feel greatly honored to have gotten to spend some time with him recently. He was willing to help out, always approachable, a real character. Life was taken from him too soon, it is unfair. We will all miss him. Our condolences go out to Libby and family, who were real saints helping him through especially these last few months. He passed peacefully (from what I have been told), and was never alone. That was a tremendous gift on everyones part. May we all remember his humor, and his willingness to help. He was quite the character, and I am blessed to have known him. Never to be forgotten. He certainly made a imprint on our family. - Posted by: Kory Theriault (cousin) on: Jul 20, 2012
