Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALICE HYGAARD (nee PRUDEN) Peacefully, on Thursday, August 9, 2012 at the Stonewall Hospital, our beloved Mom/Grammie passed away just weeks after celebrating her 90th birthday. Alice was predeceased by her husband Howard and her infant son Barry. She will be greatly missed by her son Gregory (Karen); daughters Alanna and Valerie (Gary); grandchildren Jason, Eilyn, Dylan, Kelsey, Cody and Kortney and great-grandchild Matthew. Also by her sisters Madeline, Ruth, Virginia, Georgia, Carole, Heather and sister-in-law Dorothy as well as many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank all of the caregivers involved with Alice over the past few years. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, August 15 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk with Rev. Brad Elliott officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation or the Rehab Center for Children. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

I had the pleasure of meeting Alice when she was in the Misericordia Health Centre. She and my mother sat across from each other in the dining room. I always enjoyed visiting with Alice. She was always so pleasant, kind and fun to chat with and always seemed to look on the bright side of everything. So many great memories are flooding in of my life with Alice, a strong influence in my development. I recall that she saved me from falling into the open cellar door when I was ten months old. She taught me so many things ... to tell time at the age of four, to tie my first pair of oxfords when I was six. I admired her ability to draw likenesses of movie stars (to which I followed suit) and her fun filled entertaining spirit. How many times did she lead us in the conga line as she did with the service men at the dance hall in Winnipeg Beach during the second world war. Alice would try any task like assembling ammunition for the army and disassembling it when no longer needed. There is so much to tell about her that could fill a book. I shall miss her beyond words. I grew up two streets over from the Hygaards' on Knowles Avenue, I am Val's best friend and yes... her partner in crime and hyjinx. Mrs. H. was like a second Mom, and I spent alot of time with my buddy,her Mom and Dad whether on Knowles Avenue, in Selkirk, or at Grand Marais. Auntie Alice was an awesome lady, who always found the time and patience, usually over a cup of tea (which she assured me fixes every crisis) for me. I am grateful to her for teaching me how to sew, and to do so with love! My memories are varied and scattered, but all of them cherished, I will remember Mrs. H as a wonderful Mom, Grandmother and Wife... and to me a friend.
