Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGLADYS ETHELWYN GISLASON (nee FISHER) August 17, 1942 - August 6, 2012 With deep sadness we announce the passing of Gladys Gislason at the Arborg and District Health Centre. Supported by her family and with her husband at her side, she died peacefully. Gladys had suffered a lengthy decline in health due to a neurological disorder known as Progressive Supra-Nuclear Palsy. She bore her increasing disability with much patience and forbearance. Gladys is survived by her husband, David Gislason, her daughters Katherine Palsson (Raymond), Shelly Gislason (Willian Forsyth), her grandchildren Lauren Doell (Derek), Dustin Palsson (Misho); Bailey, Morgan and Taylor Palsson; Aiden Ari and Elin Forsyth. Her surviving siblings are Blanche Bjarnason, Rita (Lou) Hutlet, Edna Sabo, Joe (Gladys) Fisher, Gwen (Ron) Shumila, Lyle (Brenda) Fisher, Linda (Bob) Davisson, and numerous nephews and nieces. Gladys was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Pearl Fisher of Hazelridge, MB, her sister May Cann, her infant brother Allen Alfred and her brothers-in-law Skapti Bjarnason, Colin Cann and Stephen Sabo. Gladys was raised on a small farm east of Winnipeg, and attended school at Hazelridge. Following grade 12 at Transcona Collegiate, Gladys worked in Winnipeg, as a filing clerk at the firm Osler Hammond Nanton and later in the drafting department at MTS on Portage Ave. East. Gladys and David were married on August 4, 1962 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with Gladys in the palliative care ward of the Arborg hospital. Gladys enjoyed life on the farm. She took a very active role in its day-to-day operation, milking cows, handling bees or driving trucks and combines at harvest time with equanimity. She enjoyed Sunday afternoon drives to check on the progress of the fields each summer. She spent long hours outdoors caring for the yard and garden which always produced an abundance of healthy food for her family. She was competent at everything she undertook, whether it was sewing special occasion clothing for her children or making playthings such as Raggedy Anne dolls for new-born children of friends far and near. Her home-made bread was second to none! Gladys took an active role in her community. She was a member of the Geysir Ladies Aid Freyja . She taught Sunday School in Geysir, later sang in the choir and served on the ELW of the Lutheran Church in Arborg. Gladys' family was her first and last love. Her guiding presence will be sorely missed. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at the Ardal-Geysir Lutheran Church on River Road in Arborg on August 31 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ardal-Geysir Lutheran Church, Box 160, Arborg, MB R0C 0A0; or the Arborg Hospital Palliative Care Program, Box 10, Arborg, MB R0C 0A0.
