OSCAR (MARINO) SIGVALDASON May 3, 1939 - August 20, 2012 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, dad and Afi, Marino Sigvaldason, following a lengthy battle with cancer. Left to mourn his passing are his loving wife of 43 years, Colleen (nee McKnight), children Darryl, Heather and Nadine (Scott Smith) and precious grandson Gavin. Siblings Ingimar (Mae), Emily, Kristin and Barney (Ethel), sister-in-law Ivy as well as numerous nieces and nephews, will also remember him fondly. Marino was predeceased by his parents Valdimar and Ingibjorg, sisters Solla and Margaret, infant brother Marino Sigvaldi and brother Lawrence. Marino was born on the family homestead, Framnesi, in Geysir, where he lived and farmed all his life. He enjoyed nothing better than going to the pasture, checking the cattle in the stillness of the morning before a busy day, and then going to town for coffee. Over the years, Marino saw the farm through progress and growth, and now leaves it to the next generation. Though a hard worker, Marino would always make time for a sit down at the round table with his farming buddies to discuss the latest farm issues. Community service was an important part of Marino's life, which included 25 years of service on the Arborg Credit Union board, as well as many years on the Geysir and Ardal Geysir Lutheran Church councils and choirs, and building committees for the local recreation centre and Ardal Geysir Lutheran Church. Marino played Senior Hockey for many years with the Arborg Falcons/Avalanche and was recently honoured for his contributions at the 50 year reunion an event that was a highlight of his final months. Passionate about music, Marino entertained at many gatherings and always enjoyed a good jam session with his accordion. There are many happy memories of dancing at local events. Marino also sang with the men's group, Soley Sangmen, performing at numerous events around the area. A memorial service will take place on Monday, August 27, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at Ardal Geysir Lutheran Church in Arborg. Internment will precede the service at 1:00 p.m. at the Geysir Cemetery. Our family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Arborg Hospital and Medical Clinic for their care and compassion, Dr. Siddiqui for his tireless efforts and Arborg and Riverton EMS for their expertise and concern. Also thanks to those at CancerCare Manitoba, both in Winnipeg and Gimli, who were involved in Marino's journey. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marino's memory can be made to the Ardal Geysir Lutheran Church or CancerCare Manitoba Foundation (colorectal cancer). Free from pain, peaceful at last. Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Dear Colleen It was a shock to hear of Marino's passing. I saw him either 2 or 3 years ago at the Icelandic Celebration in Gimli, and had a nice discussion with him then. He was in good spirits and looking very healthy, so it was really great to see him - no hint whatsoever that he was heading into a serious health challenge. We were in high school together in Arborg and I certainly spent many memorable times with he and his brother, Barney, as well as another close friend, Magnus Wold. I just want to extend my sincere condolences to you and your family, especially during this very difficult period. With kind regards.
