DOUGLAS GORDON EDMOND
Born: May 28, 1927
Date of Passing: Aug 23, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOUGLAS GORDON EDMOND Douglas Gordon Edmond, age 85, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2012 at Tuxedo Villa. He was predeceased by his parents, Douglas and Eleanor Edmond, and his brother, Ross Edmond. He is survived by his sister, Shirley Smith of Sidney, B.C., and his children, Susan, Doug (Julie Walsh), Greg (Irene Groot-Koerkamp), Jim (Heather Brown), Patti and Paul (Nancy Edmond); grandchildren, Lindsay (Peter Vieira), Christa (Ron Millar), Liz (Nick Kulyk), Kate, Thomas, Matt, Colin, Luke, Abby, Derek and Lauren; great-grandchildren, Theodore, Cassidy and Aria; and two great-grandchildren on the way. Gord, as he was affectionately known, was born on May 28, 1927 in Winnipeg. He grew up in River Heights, attended Kelvin High School and United College, and was a long-time member of the Sigma Lamda Phi fraternity. He subsequently received his AACI designation from the Appraisal Institute of Canada, and began his career as an accredited real estate appraiser. Gord was a contributor to the growth and success of the Appraisal Institute of Canada, having served as a member of its board and various committees, and becoming one of its first presidents. Gord enjoyed a successful career in mortgage lending for commercial real estate developments throughout Canada with Sovereign Life, Monarch Life and Credit Foncier, and at the end of his career, as an independent appraiser of commercial and residential real estate. There were many car rides in later years where Dad would proudly point out buildings for which he had completed appraisals and arranged commercial loans. He also contributed to his community through his service on several charitable and civic boards. In December 1950, Gord married the love of his life, Margaret Herriot, and they had six children together. Gord was very proud of his children, and took great pleasure in their educational achievements and their professional careers. Gord was a gregarious man who liked to laugh, tell jokes and sing. It was a rare occasion when he did not have a story or a joke to share at gatherings with family and friends. As a gifted raconteur with a quick wit, he was often the life of the party who loved to make people laugh. Gord particularly enjoyed spending time at the family cottage at West Hawk Lake, and subsequently at his own cabin at Lac du Bonnet. He loved to tinker at the cottage, and it was not unusual for his building projects to turn out entirely different from what had been planned initially. Gord was both inventive and highly energetic, and the family never knew what imaginative creation awaited them in the basement. Gord enjoyed watching football, and suffered through losses by the Blue Bombers and cheered their wins with great gusto. Gord was a proud father, grandfather, and in his later years, a great-grandfather. He leaves behind many lasting memories, friends and his greatest legacy his vibrant and loving family. He will be missed by all. In lieu of flowers, please do something nice for someone in Gord's memory. A memorial service will be held at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue, at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 30, 2012. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204- 949-2200 nbardal.mb.ca

Dear Patti, Greg and family... what a wonderful tribute to your Dad. I had heard that he was getting weaker - but - still - "it's hard to lose a Dad". Big hugs to you both and all of your family. Sandy Lysachok - Posted by: Sandy Lysachok (Patti's and Greg's friend) on: Aug 30, 2012

The Norton family lived across the street on Yale Avenue from the Edmonds. I remember attending primary to high school with Greg and Doug. My brothers are friends with Jim and Paul. We've always enjoyed spending time with the Edmonds. My condolences to the family for your loss. - Posted by: Laurel Norton (Neighbour) on: Aug 27, 2012
