ROGER BLAINE GREIG August 30, 1954 - August 26, 2012 Passed away peacefully in Winnipeg, surrounded by the love of his family. Roger will be missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his much-loved children Randy and Jenny, and their mother Lorraine. He is fondly remembered by his siblings: Carroll and her husband Bruce Henderson; George and his wife Judy Greig; Gordon and his wife Jackie Greig; and Jan Greig and her husband Don Carroll, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. Roger was born in Swan River, Manitoba and attended school in Minitonas, Keewatin Community College in The Pas, and Red River Community College in Winnipeg, where he achieved his Business Administration Certificate. His varied working career included working in metallurgy in Lynn Lake, manager of various men's clothing stores in Winnipeg, distributor for the Winnipeg Free Press and owner/operator with DHL courier. For many years, Roger's main activities centered around his participation in sports: football, hockey, baseball, badminton, golf, and curling. While recent declining health issues curtailed Roger's capability in participating in activities he loved, he found a new passion in his involvement with C.N.I.B. and their support group. Family's heartfelt thanks goes to the staff at the Poseidon Personal Care Home in Winnipeg, who looked after Roger in the last few years of his life. You were very much a part of his joy, and the care and tenderness given to him by each of you was appreciated. Roger's funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, August 31, 2012, in the Chapel of Memories, Wojcik's Funeral Chapel, 1020 Main Street at Manitoba Avenue, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, if you are so inclined, family would appreciate donations being made in Roger's honour to either the Canadian Diabetes Association or the C.N.I.B.

Condolences & Memories (17 entries)

  • I was lucky to have Roger as my neighbour twice in my life. In the ealy 1980's we lived in separate units in a new, sprawling apartment complex on the Red River in St.Vital. He was vey easy to talk to and on weekends we would get together for a drink and a barbeque. After a few years we both graduated to home ownership, moving to nearby River Park South and we became backyard neighbours. Roger taught me how to curl and was my skip for a few seasons in a mixed league. He was a great instructor, patient, helpful and always full of good cheer. I knew he'd like to win but with a low-skilled player on his team like me there was little chance of success. The objective of this mixed league was to have fun and Roger made sure we did. Roger always had interesting stories about his life in Swan River; full of baseball, curling and hockey. He often spoke about the great times he had with his family. They loved him and he loved them back. Roger was a born entrepreneur. Not content with his managerial job he took the gutsy move of leaving this safe position to start his own trucking/distribution business. He worked extremely hard and was fully committed to its success. I know he struggled as many new businesses do. But it is people like Roger, who have a dream and are willing to take on new challenges and the associated risks that create the dynamic, prosperous economy we Canadians all enjoy. After about 5 years of being neighbours we both sold our homes, moved away, and lost contact with each other. My memories of Roger will forever be of a confident, young, energetic man, who loved athletics and was always willing to lend a neighbour a helping hand. Now I imagine he is somewhere on a curling rink, telling some dumb city boy the difference between an in turn and an out turn. I miss you Roger. My condolences to the entire Greig family. - Posted by: Dave Boldt (friend and neighbour) on: Dec 16, 2012

  • I only met Roger once or twice, when he came to one of the Friday morning groups at the CNIB, which I also attend. Us attendees were all shocked and saddened to learn of his passing as the couple that help run the group had been to see him shortly before his death, and said that he was doing well then. Having lost my own father just last year, I can empathize with the pain that his much-loved children are feeling during the times when they miss him the most. He was a friendly man who enjoyed being with others. We didn't get to talk to each other very much, but I've no doubt that he was a devoted husband, father and friend. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends. Remember that he is always with you in your heart. - Posted by: Ana (A fellow attendee of the CNIB's Friday morning group, which Roger attended from time to time) on: Oct 12, 2012

  • I will always remember Uncle Roger's generosity with his time and willingness to help whenever he could. From teaching me to drive standard in his Toyota van to letting me use his old pickup for cutting lawns as a summer job. You will be missed but never forgotten. - Posted by: Jason Hazelton (Family) on: Oct 04, 2012
