MAY MANNELL (nee SHADDY) After a long and well lived life Mom passed away on Saturday, August 25, 2012, at the Riverview Health Center in her 96th year. Mom was born on October 18, 1915, in Winnipeg on Alexander Avenue in the Weston area. She attended Cecil Rhodes and Daniel McIntyre schools. Mom was predeceased by her husband Gordon in 1995, brother Alex and sisters Olga and Josie Downey. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Karen (Werner) Becker and Brenda (Lorne) Campbell. Mom has four grandchildren Dean (Lisa), Tara (Jeff), Jonathon, Shannon (Shane) and five great-grandchildren Holly, Curtis, Jillian, Jordan and Owen. She is also survived by her little brother Joe who is 93 years young, sister-in-law Annis and many nieces and nephews. Mom worked for Scott Bathgate (Nutty Club) in the early years of her life which she still talked about until her passing. She picked up her mom's passion for rental properties and became a successful landlord for 60 years. Mom loved to have parties, shop and travel with her family and friends. We would like to thank the staff at Riverview and Tuxedo Villa for taking wonderful care of our mom. We invite family and friends to a celebration of Mom's life that will take place on Friday, September 7 at 4:30 p.m. at the Greenwood Inn at 1715 Wellington Avenue. Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Many people will remember Auntie May for her upbeat personality and joie de vivre. She was particularly close to her sister, Josie Downey. I recall with fondness a visit the two widowed aunts made to Toronto: Auntie Josie had a heart condition, and Auntie May had vision problems, but, by combining their strengths, they were able to run around town like teenagers, no doubt retracing former steps when they were teenagers. It was so much fun having them stay with me, and I still have the tea kettle they gave me. (They were always making tea.) I also remember my trips to Winnipeg to visit my parents, when, every morning, like clockwork, I would be abruptly awakened by a ringing telephone at 6:00 a.m. Of course, it was Auntie May, calling my father to check the crossword, but she was always so cheerful and happy to talk to me that it was hard not to forgive her for disturbing my sleep. She was larger than life, and she will be missed. My condolences to Karen and Brenda and their husbands, who took such extraordinary care of her, and to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whose visits so brightened her final years. - Lindsay Shaddy - Posted by: Lindsay Shaddy (Niece) on: Sep 07, 2012

  • There are so many wonderful "Auntie May" stories and memories that we will cherish and pass along to the next generation. I remember having tea at her place when I was 4 or 5 years old... there were always plenty of cookies to enjoy. Later as an adult, I enjoyed having a stronger beverage when I would drop by to visit. She was pretty cool Aunt driving around town in her 1970s-era Camero. - Posted by: Bill Shaddy (Nephew) on: Sep 04, 2012

  • May Mannell will be rembered by the Downeys as such a positive and supportive person who loved her sister, Josie Downey, very much. Every day until Josie passed away, the two sisters talked on the phone at least once a day and both were good examples of the strength that comes from family relationships. May peace be among us at this time of May's passing. Special thoughts for Tom and Mia and their families. - Posted by: Lynne Hindle (nee Downey) () on: Sep 02, 2012
