Condolences & Memories (18 entries)

  • I was one of Grant's Interior Design students from the mid to late 1970's. Grant certainly was one of my favourite professors. His vast knowledge and talent in so many aspects of design was exceptional. He was a very fine teacher as well. I loved his great sense of humour and humility. Grant will be greatly missed and my heart goes out to Marni and her children Alix and Kirsten and their families. I am so sorry that I didn't find out until today that Grant had passed. If I would have known, I would have most certainly would have attended his memorial service. - Posted by: Kathi Wirth (friend, former interior design student) on: Oct 01, 2012

  • Sincere condolences to Marnie and family. Grant was a wonderful person and very talented designer. I had the privilege of working on a few projects with him, which was always enjoyable. We'll all miss him. - Posted by: Heather Cram (friend) on: Sep 13, 2012

  • I had a great deal of respect for him as a person and an artist. Sad that life is so short. - Posted by: Tom Dojack (Profssional Friend) on: Sep 12, 2012

  • Grant and my dear late father (Leonard Marcoe)had a close and enduring friendship. They had a mutual respect for each other as both friends and artists. My father held a couple of very successful shows to exhibit Grant's work and I still recall the crowds in attendance, the hard work and the fun we had ensuring Grant's shows were special. I can still hear my father and Grant discussing anything and everything, with a few little tidbits of gossip thrown in, along with a lot of laughter. At this time, I have done a great deal of reflecting and remembering. I know my father was very gratified that Grant was a vital person in his life. My sincere condolences to Marnie and family. - Posted by: Valli Marcoe (Friend) on: Sep 12, 2012

  • Dear Grant - he gave so willingly of himself, and we all are lessened by his absence. As a professor, he had a 'baptism of fire' with our class, but through it all we became life long friends. Marnie, our prayers are with you at this very sad time. Marilyn Donoghue - Posted by: Marilyn Donoghue (Student, colleague, and friend) on: Sep 08, 2012

  • Sincere condolences to Marnie, Kirsten and Alix. Grant was one of my favorite people from the day we met some 15 years ago. Each year, I learned more about his vast talents and wide-ranging accomplishments, but was always most struck by his warmth and genuine caring about people. No wonder his early students and clients still speak of him so highly. Grant will be dearly missed. - Posted by: David Christianson (Friend and advisor) on: Sep 08, 2012

  • I was a student of Grant's in the Interior Design program at University of Manitoba. He was an amazing professor who genuinely cared for his students. I was lucky enough to have Grant teach me watercolour painting at sketch camp and still have the painting of a birch tree - he did one half and I did the other, I've never forgotten that little session! He will be truly missed. - Posted by: Debbie Grant (Past Student) on: Sep 07, 2012

  • Our dear professor, Grant Marshall, taught us how to see. His integrity and profound love of design inspired us as students to make him proud, and his lessons continue to resonate in our minds and hearts even today. Our thoughts are with his family and we thank them for sharing Grant with us. - Posted by: cynthia penner and jay brooks ( former students (class of 1991/90)) on: Sep 07, 2012

  • I offer sincere condolences to the Isford/Marshall family. I have fond memories of the Marshalls being one of my first "employers" as my good friend Mundi and I mowed their lawn for a summer or two. He and Marnie were always very kind to us. - Posted by: Derek Longfield (& Barb) () on: Sep 06, 2012

  • A warm, talented and interesting man with the highest aesthetic sensibility, and a very good friend to our family all the time I was growing up. The world will be a smaller place without him. - Posted by: David Coop (Family friend) on: Sep 06, 2012

  • Grant was an enthusiastic and talented professor, businessman, designer and artist. My recent memories are of watercolor classes taken at the U of W Women's Club on Middlegate a couple of years ago. Grant was always encouraging and we all learned a lot from these wonderful classes. I will never forget the paintings he did of the lovely old homes in Winnipeg and his stories of painting trips taken abroad. - Posted by: Susan Bulman (former student and admirer of Grant's watercolor talents) on: Sep 06, 2012
