Just after WW 11 John was working as a mechanic in a service station at Isabel & Elgin in Winnipeg where he met my father who had dealt there for years. That was the beginning of a lifetime friendship; when John moved to another station, my dad moved his trade with him. Soon, no one else touched his car and he never bought a car again unless John Dyck approved the purchase. No distance was too far for Dad to travel for service - even for something as small as an oil change. Coincidentally, in the sixties, I began dealing with John as well at his new station on Osborne since his reputation was solid though I did not know at the time of their history until one time I ran into my dad there. Many of John’s customers became his friends as well and all would trust him implicitly. John and Ruby became close friends with my mom and dad and they spent many happy weekends and holidays at Millar’s Camp at LacLu or visits back and forth in Winnipeg or Stonewall. No task was too great or small for a helpful bit of advice, a professional reference, a shoulder behind a wheel, a trip at an inconvenient time or a visit as my parents began ailing. No one was closer to my folks until their passing. And of course, as I learned to bask in the warmth of John and Ruby’s friendship, there are few people I appreciate more. We’ve lost a good man whose family and friends were his great inspiration. We can only hope and pray that he will be waiting for us with his kind smile and gentle manner when our time comes. - Posted by: Jim Millar (Friend for 40 + years) on: Sep 14, 2012
