SIDNEY SEGAL 1931 - 2012 On August 30, 2012, with loving family by his side, Sidney peacefully passed away at the age of 81. Sidney is survived by his wife Gayle of 58 years, children Rhonda and Zvi Gordon and David and Glenda Segal, and his ultimate pride and joy, grandsons Jason and Jeffrey Gordon, Shimon, Devin and Ryan Segal, Avie Erdile and great-grandchildren Lucy Gordon and Alexander Erdile. Sid is also survived by his aunt Eleanor Gunn, sisters-in-law Ann Gardner and Gladys Dubo and in-laws Hy and Donna Dubo, with whom he had a special bond, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Dorothy and Joseph, sister Shirley (Ben) Billinkoff, mother-in-law, Molly Dubovsky and Gayle's siblings, Sue (Jack) Lomow, Harry Dubo, and Fay (Max) Klapman. Born in Winnipeg's North End in 1931, Sid attended St. John's Technical School, where he excelled as a softball pitcher, hockey goalie and boxer. He was a loyal friend and protector to those fortunate enough to know him. In his youth, he worked as a telegram messenger and door-to-door salesman. Very early in life, he found a passion for business, working in retail management for Dayton's and Saan Stores and then in the garment industry for Junior Wear, Peerless Garments and Kaplan Manufacturing. Sid was a savvy and talented businessman, who was highly respected in the business community. He was a loving, caring and devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and uncle. Sid was a fervent protector and caregiver a feisty man who would do anything for his family and friends. Sid will be remembered for his intelligence, incredible sense of humour and love for a good story or joke. As the chief officer of the Grant Park Mall Tim Hortons and McDonald's clubs, he commanded the crowd with his endless supply of jokes and stories. He derived immeasurable joy from meeting new people, listening to their stories, and providing advice and guidance. Throughout his life, Sid relentlessly emphasized the importance of family. He never missed a Sunday breakfast with his son, he always volunteered to chauffeur his grandchildren wherever they needed to go, and he made sure everyone he met felt part of the Segal Crew'. He inherited his nurturing tendencies in his youth from his beloved grandmother - Baba Asneh - and passed them down to his children and grandchildren. He nurtured his grandsons' interests, showered them with unending love and support, and never hesitated to brag about them to anyone he met. His family will forever cherish his humour and unconditional love, support and encouragement. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the amazing staff at The Simkin Centre, Victoria Hospital, PRIME, Deer Lodge Centre and Riverview Health Centre for their expert care and attention. Funeral service was held on September 4, 2012, at Temple Shalom with interment at Beit Chaim Mikdash Shalom in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, officiated by Cantor Len Udow. Pallbearers were grandsons Jason Gordon, Jeffrey Gordon, Shimon Segal, Devin Segal, Ryan Segal and Avie Erdile. If desired, donations in Sid's memory can be made to a charity of choice.
