JAMES DOUGLAS JOHNSTON It is with sadness that we announce that Doug passed away peacefully on September 11, 2012 at Concordia Hospital after a brief illness. James Douglas Johnston was born March 7, 1928 in Ottawa, Ontario to parents James and Catherine (Johnson) Johnston. He graduated from St. John Technical High School and attended Carleton College. He moved to Winnipeg in 1950 and played briefly with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Doug married Joan Chasney on May 14, 1952 and they recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Doug began his business career working for Chisick's Scrap Metal Co. and over time became part of the family, remaining close to the Chisick's until his death. In the late 1950s, Doug formed a trucking company, Continental Forwarding Ltd., which he operated until he retired in the mid 1970s. After retiring from the business, Doug kept busy as a property manager. Doug and Joan enjoyed spending winters at their condo in Lighthouse Point, Florida, and in the 1980s they began traveling in Europe and especially enjoyed barging on many different waterways in France. Doug was a member of the Shrine on the Director's Staff of Khartoum Temple. He was a very giving person and many charities benefited from his generosity. Doug was a devoted husband to Joan, a caring brother to his siblings, and a loving uncle to his nieces and nephews. He was a people person and was never happier than when he was entertaining friends or relatives at home, at the Club or at his new favourite restaurant around Winnipeg. Doug was predeceased by his parents, sisters, Isabelle MacIntyre and Emma Lamb and his brother, Jack Johnston. He is survived by his wife, Joan, his sister Joan Broder of Ottawa, Ontario, and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorials may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, Manitoba; Make a Wish Foundation, 520 - 4211 Young St., Toronto, Ontario or a charity of your choice. • Dear Joan, Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Doug was such a kind and gentle man and we will miss him. I found this poem that I felt was fitting for Doug - we will never forget him... "He is a champion, a hero It is not what he has which expresses the worth of him, but what he is. He wears his crest upon his heart." - Amiel - Posted by: Leah and Rheal Dupuis () on: Sep 19, 2012
