IRENE SALAY (CHEPIL)
Date of Passing: Sep 14, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryIRENE SALAY (nee CHEPIL) Peacefully, on September 14, 2012 at Grace Hospital, with her family at her side, Mom went home to be with the Lord. She was 95. Granny, as she was known to all who loved her, was born in Gimli, MB, to Pearl and Stefan Chepil, the seventh of 13 children. They have all predeceased her but for her brother Morris of Brantford, ON. She leaves three sisters-in-law, Roberta, Jean and Florence, and many nieces and nephews on the Chepil side. She and her husband Peter, who passed in 1971, raised six children together in Edwin/Portage la Prairie, MB. Left to mourn are: Stella (Stan) Smith, of Brandon, Joe (Shirley) Salay of Winnipeg, Helen (Herb) Calverley of Winnipeg, Julie (Darryl) Danner of Winnipeg, Gerry (Robin) Salay of Langley, BC, and Vincent (Marie) Salay of Winnipeg. The lights of her life were her 13 grandchildren and her 18 great-grandchildren. She loved them very much and they will miss her terribly. In her later years, Granny was given the nickname the Queen by her children, and she came by it quite honestly. She was regal, proud, stubborn, meticulous to detail, and fiercely independent. She remained alert and in charge right until the end. Granny left all of us, young and old, with a wonderful legacy. She taught us the value of hard work and the importance of family. We were her pride and joy. Gardening was her favorite pastime and she was a great cook. Times remembered will always include our Christmas Eve dinners of perogies and sauerkraut soup, and special celebrations that often ended with her famous apple pie. Mom always told us when we were scared or had something unpleasant to face to be a good soldier . We will all try our best mom. We would like to thank the staff of Grace Hospital for their care, especially Brenda from Spiritual Care. A service to celebrate Mom's amazing life will be held on Friday, September 21 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or the charity of your choice. Precious Mother, Eyes in whose depths always linger a smile, Seeing through love only good things worth while, Heart always ready with comfort for others, All these are yours..best and dearest of Mothers. Love you always and forever Aunt Irene. You reminded me ever so much of my mother Eva Dora, even your handwriting was so very similar. Remembering past visits to Winnipeg with all your sisters, my aunts, together cooking and joking and bickering happily, the lovely smells of Ukrainian cooking in the kitchen will always be in my memory forever. Love you very much and thank you for those precious memories. We all miss you terribly. posted by Donna Meyer, niece, December 14, 2013 - Posted by: Donna meyer (Niece) on: Dec 14, 2013

As I read her obituary, a scripture from Proverbs 31 came to mind as a fitting tribute to my Aunty Irene. " Her children (and grandchildren and great grandchildren) rise up and call her blessed.... "Many women have done excellently, but you, Auntie Irene, surpass them. " - Posted by: Lezlie Martinson (Niece) on: Sep 20, 2012

Dear family, Aunt Irene is very much on my mind. I saw houses near Stratford this morning that reminded me of her charming home in Portage, and I remembered the years of gracious hospitality and enduring love that she gave to all of us then, and over the years. I wish I could be at her service. However, I have a cold/flu and am still far away. We will be home in a few days and look forward to seeing you all. We will miss Aunt Irene so much.
