HELEN FLORENCE TIMLER (nee LEVANDOSKI) February 19, 1922 - September 1, 2012 Helen gently left us on Saturday, September 1, 2012 at the age of 90. Her health had been failing for the past couple years but she always kept her sense of humour and lived as independently as she could (sometimes to the consternation of her family!) In her last days of life, her sense of humour amused us even as we grieved. Helen was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to John and Justyna and grew up with ten siblings. After graduating from high school she began her work career. Helen always regretted not being able to attend college but as a senior she made up for lost time by taking many courses over many years at Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton. She was proud of her children's accomplishments including their completion of post-secondary education. Helen moved to Vancouver where she met and married her husband Walter in 1955. She worked for Hudson's Bay in accounts receivable until 1958. Then they set off for what would become a journey to many parts of Canada. Helen trekked after Walter, eventually with three children in tow, from British Columbia to Labrador and back. They eventually settled in Edmonton in 1974. She enjoyed being a homemaker for her husband and family throughout these years. When Walter bought a plane, she reluctantly learned how to be a single engine co-pilot and they flew to many parts of North America. They travelled extensively and finally landed a winter home in Mesa, Arizona that attracted friends and family on a regular basis. She liked to cook and her perogies, borscht and cabbage rolls were always in demand when her family visited. After losing Walter in 1993, Helen took to travelling to visit her siblings by rail, bus or air. She also travelled to Calgary, Yellowknife, Montana, Manitoba, Ontario, Australia, and Florida to visit her transient children and grandchildren. When not travelling, she kept in touch with letters and sometimes copious, enlightening' newspaper clippings. Helen's love of the arts made her a season ticket holder at the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra until 2011. She was tough to beat at Scrabble in her younger years, loved crossword puzzles and was a bit of a walking dictionary. She was particular about her appearance and loved her high heels. When she could no longer wear these because of balance problems, she said she missed the click, click, click sound that they made. In 2003, Helen moved to The Churchill, an assisted living home in downtown Edmonton. She was active in many of the social pursuits offered there including Bridge, Scrabble, Canasta, knitting and movie nights. The Churchill staff were increasingly supportive which greatly helped to extend her time living there the last couple years. We moved her to Roca Care in Calgary in January this year. There she received attentive and loving care from Rosalina and her family. Helen is survived by siblings, Tony, Carol, Julie and Regina. She is also survived by her children: Mark (Vikki) of Calgary, Boyd (Mary-Anne) of Perth, Australia; Alison (Rich) Hagedorn of Bradenton, Florida and seven grandchildren, Amanda, Samantha, Kelsey, Jaima, Matthew, Gabriella and Joseph. Helen was predeceased by her siblings, Julia, Stephie, Stanley, Kazmar, Walter and Jimmy. Helen was tired and at peace with leaving us, confident of going to a better place. Funeral Service was held at LEYDEN'S CHAPEL OF REMEMBRANCE (corner of 17th Avenue and 2nd Street SW, Calgary) on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to Grant MacEwan University, P.O. Box 1796, Edmonton, AB T5J 2P2, Telephone: 1-888-497-4622, email: info@macewan.ca.
