Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDR. ROBERT DE VON FLINDT It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Robert de von Flindt at Grace Hospital on Thursday, September 20, 2012. Bob was born in Asbury Park, New Jersey, on December 23, 1935, and grew up on the Jersey shore. He attended Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania and received his BA from Monmouth College in West Long Branch, NJ, where a professor inspired him to shift his major from philosophy to psychology. He received his Masters and PhD in clinical psychology from Arizona State University. After completing a one-year internship at the University of Colorado Medical Center in Denver, Bob and Marilyn moved to New Jersey where Bob joined the staff at the Henry Pollak Clinic in West Long Branch. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas. Following a year of private practice in Houston, Texas, Bob was recruited to Winnipeg in 1970, to establish the first child psychology internship program at the University of Manitoba Department of Psychiatry in the faculty of Medicine. Bob was the program's first training director and was the department's only doctoral level child psychologist for a number of years. During his long tenure with the department he served as a long-time mentor to generations of child psychologists in Winnipeg. Bob was a long-standing supervisor for child psychology for the internship program until his retirement and was an expert in child psychotherapy. Bob met his wife Marilyn in 1959. After a lengthy two-month courtship they married in Phoenix, Arizona, and celebrated nearly 53 years of fun-filled and loving marriage. Special joys were the birth of his daughters Kris and Michele in New Jersey. Cherishing memories of Bob are Marilyn, Kris, Michele, his sons-in-law Tim and Kelly, and his grandchildren Sarah, Dave, and Megan. Bob was predeceased by his parents Austin and Muriel de von Flindt and his sister Pat Winsor. We will remember Bob for his love of photography, breadmaking and books, his awesome Caesar mix, and his love of music from Beethoven to Springsteen. The family wishes to express sincere thanks to the staff at Grace Hospital for their care and support at this difficult time. A contribution to the Assiniboine Park Conservancy's development, Journey to Churchill will reflect a moment in Bob's career with University of Manitoba Northern Medical Unit that he truly enjoyed. We will celebrate Bob's life at a memorial service to be held on Wednesday, September 26, 2012, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue, across from Brookside Cemetery. Bob was first a mentor when I did my internship at the Health Sciences Centre (HSC) and later a colleague when I joined the faculty. He was always supportive not only to me but also to dozens of other interns from across North America who interned at HSC and were guided by his wise counsel. I only learned of Bob's passing after the celebration of his life on Sept 26. Bob was brilliant and humble at the same time and made an enormous contribution to the internship at HSC. - Posted by: John Arnett (Colleague) on: Sep 30, 2012

I found myself thinking about Bob last week wondering whether he might have moved away as I had not seen him for a long time. Accordingly, I was shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. Although Bob was in the child section and I worked with adults at the Health Sciences Centre, we did spend many hours together in meetings relating to the internship program which he was instrumental in setting up. I only have good memories of Bob. I would like to pass on my condolences to his family. - Posted by: Dr.Ivan Bilash (co-worker) on: Sep 26, 2012
