J. K. (JACK) HENDERSON
Born: Jan 22, 1927
Date of Passing: Sep 20, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJ. K. (JACK) HENDERSON It is with sadness we announce the passing of Jack Henderson on September 20, 2012, at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Alice, son Craig (Linda) and daughters Vikki Henderson (Campbell Alexander), Pat Bray (Ted) and Linda McDonald (Stewart); sister Merrill Stange, niece Tracey Stange (Mike Rayner) and nephew Mark Stange. He is also survived by grandchildren Douglas and Cameron Henderson, Sasha Cantafio (Mario), Jackson Saunders, Kelly Bray, Jonathon Bray (Lindsay), Kory McDonald Ibarra (Pedro); great-grandchildren, Keira Henderson, Gabriel and Spencer Cantafio, Kaitlyn Bray, Aiden, Ruby, and Faye Kofoed, and Bianca Ibarra. Jack was born on January 22, 1927, in Norwood and attended King George School. In 1947, Jack joined the St. Boniface Fire Department and on June 1, 1972, he became fire chief for Fort Garry. After amalgamation Jack worked in various positions, finally assuming the post of Chief for the City in November 1985. He served in this capacity until his retirement on January 13, 1991. He loved every minute of his public service of 44 years attending many fires with his buddies on the job and continued to look out for the welfare of the men and women in the Department after he became chief. Jack was an avid golfer, and he and Alice travelled widely. They both enjoyed their respective extended families and grandchildren. In his later years his memory started to wane but he still retained his sense of humour and was the go-to guy for names of movies, songs and other trivia almost right to the end. The family extends a special thanks to the staff at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg for their kind and tender care of Jack over the last three years. Should friends desire, donations in Jack's name can be made to the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg or the Firefighters Burn Fund. A service of remembrance will be held on Friday, September 28 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715

My condolences to Alice and the entire family. My Father, T.L. (Lloyd) Moist was a colleague of Jack's and preceeded Jack as Fire Chief. My father always spoke of Jack with the greatest of respect and together with my Mother, Mae spent countless hours with Alice and Jack at the Firefighter's Historical Society. So I offer my sincerest condolences on behalf of the Moist Family. Jack Henderson served the citizens of Winnipeg with distinction for over four decades. Sadly, and ironically he along with my Father and Jack Coulter is the third Winnipeg Fire Chief to pass away this year. May they rest in peace. Paul Moist - Posted by: Paul Moist () on: Sep 24, 2012

Wonderful memories of Uncle Jack especially the time we went to Folklorama and he knew all the right places to park and the fastest routes to the venues so we could see more in a night than some did in a week! He will be sadly missed - condolences to all. - Posted by: Micheline Drewniak (Niece) on: Sep 24, 2012

I first met Chief Henderson when he was the Captain on one of the other shifts in my first station. I grew to like and respect him. He was, in my opinion, the best Chief we ever had. When I became an officer, we did medical calls frequently to the building he lived in. If I saw him downstairs, I would always take whoever I was with and introduce them to the Chief. He was a good man and a good firefighter. - Posted by: Scott G. Miner (Colleague) on: Sep 24, 2012
