LILLIAN BELL/BRUCE (MILLER) Lillian Bell/Bruce passed away, surrounded by family, on September 29, 2012 at Concordia Hospital after a brief fight with cancer. Lillian is survived by her daughter Judi Bell (Calgary), son Gerry (Cindy) Bell, grandchildren Michael Bell (Ottawa), Corinne Schott (Ken) (Kingston) and Derek Bell. Also mourning her passing are sister Lenore Henry, brother Ervin Miller, sister-in-law Sandra Miller, nieces and nephews, and stepchildren Wayne Bruce (Heather) and Darlene McVey (David) and their families. Lillian was predeceased by husbands Gordon Bell (1994) and Mel Bruce (2011), brother Ernie Miller, and in-laws Norman Henry, Mary Lou Miller, Bill and Jean Bell, Louise Bell and Ann Bell. Mom was born in Lipton, Saskatchewan on November 24, 1926 to Henry and Jean Miller. The family then moved to the Rockwood - Stonewall area where she first met our father. She eventually moved to Winnipeg where she reconnected with and married Dad and began her working career. Mom worked for Nutty Club, at Grieves aka Riverview Ice Cream Shop or The Grill on Osborne Street, first as a waitress and then as owner. Canada Safeway was her last employer, first in snack bars across the city and then in the bakery on Leila. Mom did volunteer work throughout her life and taught us the importance of giving back to the community. She was active in Riverview United Church in the U.C.W. and various committees. She was a volunteer providing respite care for caregivers through the Hospice Association and the Concordia Hospital Auxiliary. She continued to volunteer at a personal care home until the spring of this year. She married Gordon in 1948 and had 46 years with him, raising their children and going to the lake, spending many weekends and holidays there. She especially enjoyed all of the times she had with her grandchildren. We have many happy memories of being with her and Dad, whether camping across western Canada or spending time at Twin Beaches and, of course, at our Lee River cottage. When she married Mel, she became the fiddler's wife , travelling all over the province and northern Alberta watching him play old time fiddle music at community dances, events and competitions. She told many stories of the good times she had and the many friends she met. We extend a special thank you to the staff on N3East and the Palliative Care staff at Concordia Hospital for all their care tending to Mom during her stay. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice and Palliative Care Manitoba or CancerCare Manitoba would be appreciated. A Memorial service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715

  • My Mother just read the obituary for Lillian, and it brought back memories for her. Her family (Smith) lived across the road from the Millers when they moved to the Rockwood district in the '20s. We used to meet her sometimes when we travelled to the city with Mom. Although they weren't close, close friends, Mom thought highly of Lillian. Mom is now 92 and has a wonderful memory. - Posted by: Cheryl Willis (Mother Clara (Smith) Moore was old friend from Rockwood School days.) on: Oct 05, 2012

  • I was privileged to have met & known Mrs Bell. Her Son Gerry & Cindy & I have been friends for over 20 years, having met through Scouting & Guiding. I also got to know Mrs Bell by taking care of her many Buicks at the Dealership I worked for. She was a very lovely Lady, very warm & caring and genuine. She reminded me a lot of my own Mother. And, she was always so proud of her Grandchildren, who I also have been privileged to know through Scouting. Mrs Bell will be missed very much by many. She was the kind of Lady that this world needs more of. Rest in peace Lil, and of course, my heartfelt sympathy to her family. - Posted by: Ron Power (Friend of Gerry & Cindy, and thier children) on: Oct 02, 2012

  • Mrs. Bell was my mother's bridesmaid and they stayed friends for over 50 years until my mom's passing in 2007. Mom would talk about her "wonderful Lil" and their many long telephone conversations. I have pictures of My parents and Lil and her first husband at parties. I wish her peace and comfort and my families deepest sympathies to her family - Posted by: Fran Rosenberg (Bussell) (Mrs Bell/Bruce was a very close friend to my mother Lauraine Bussell.) on: Oct 02, 2012

  • Thankyou, for loving and caring for my Dad. You helped celebrate his passion for old time fiddling and this added years to his life. I will always be grateful for the hugs Dad gave me because of how you loved him. I will miss our lunches of grilled cheese sandwiches, pickles and tea. I will miss our conversations (how I loved chatting with you!) and the laughter. Mother Lill, it's only been a year since Dad passed and we talked of how much we both missed him and now you are gone too. Far too soon for me. My comfort now is that you will be forever with Dad in Heaven. I will always hold you dearly and tenderly in my heart. Love you, Darlene - Posted by: Darlene McVey (Bruce) (Step-daughter) on: Oct 02, 2012
