ENGILBERT SIGURDSON On Saturday, September 29, 2012, at Concordia Hospital, Bert Sigurdson passed away at the age of 90 years. Bert was born August 24, 1922, the youngest of the six children of Kristjan and Thorbjorg Sigurdson. He lived in the West End for more than 80 of his 90 years, and had a deep attachment to the area. He was proud of his Icelandic heritage, which was well established in the West End of his youth. He joined the R.C.A.F. at the age of 20 and served as a radio operator. After the war, he worked for the C.N.R. in Northern Manitoba and then with the Rock Island Railroad in the Winnipeg office. In the late 1950s, he began studies in Social Work at the University of Manitoba. After graduation, he worked at, what is now, the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities. A few years after retiring from SMD, he was employed as a security guard for 20 years. Bert loved the arts, whether literature, classical music, ballet, or painting and was able to speak knowledgeably on all. He worked at keeping his mind active by doing crossword and Sudoku puzzles, and reading the newspapers, often surprising people on his knowledge of current events. Bert was known, to all who met him, as a true gentleman, and for his kindness. The past two years, he struggled with several medical conditions, but was always positive in his outlook. On Saturday, September 29, 2012, Bert ended the saga of the children of Kristjan and Thorbjorg joining sisters Solveig, Agnes, Valgerdur and brothers Jon and Olmar in peace. He is survived by his nieces and nephews and their families. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 www.nbardal.mb.ca

  • My condolences to the family. Bert was such a special dear man. I fondly remember all the Christmas cards we received that we had to guess who it was from as he never signed his name. - Posted by: Karen Komar (Family Friend (Jim Ricker's great niece)) on: Oct 03, 2012
