KATE KUHL Kate Bertha (Janzen) Kuhl died peacefully on October 15, 2012. Kate was predeceased by her parents, her brother John, and her daughter Nancy Lavergne. She will be remembered with love by Dave, her husband of 66 years, her children, Robert (Sue Cullis-Kuhl), Bev (Carl Pauls) and David (Jean McIntyre), son-in-law Ray Lavergne (friend Carol Shirran), her grandchildren, Darcy (Denise Sanders), Cory (Carolyn Senchuk), Katie (Alan Chamout), Emma, Lucas, Allison, Jennifer and Sarah, and her great-grandchildren, Max, Brook, Taylor, Bryn, Logan, Cadence and Madden. She will also be greatly missed by her siblings, Charlotte Redekopp, Hedie (Edwin Hintz), Jake (Tillie Braun), Esther (Vern Dyck) and Neil (Herta Rempel) as well as her large extended family all of which was very important to her as were her many, many friends. It is impossible to sum up the whole of Kate's life and nature in a few words. She was born to Aron Franz and Katharina Jakob Janzen on February 2, 1924 in Millerova, Russia and several months later the family immigrated to Canada, settling in Arnaud, Manitoba. Kate and Dave lived in Plum Coulee, Winkler and Winnipeg. It was with a spirit of adventure, optimism and inquiry that Kate embraced life, wherever she lived. Her unconditional love, acceptance and support of her family was such that she was determined to know and understand each of them and to make certain they knew their roots, whether through written stories, conversations or emails; she also celebrated their uniqueness. Those same features characterized her relationships with her friends. Kate was a lifelong student and a teacher, professionally and personally. She was very creative especially in sewing, knitting, writing, and using her computer in which she was more skilled than most of her children and grandchildren. Her genuine care for others and her ability to relate to them was evident as she freely shared her knowledge and skills in friendship, in service to others and as a volunteer in her church and in the community. When asked, she also spoke of her deep faith that served as her ultimate source of strength, guidance, and love. Special thanks to Kate's family physician, Dr. P. Mehta, to her chaplain, Pastor Neil Block, and to the very caring and attentive Palliative Care teams in the community and at St. Boniface Hospital. The service of celebrating Kate's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 19, 2012 at Portage Avenue Church, 1420 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Unit, St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, C1026-409 Taché Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2H 2A6 or Sam's Place: Books, MCC Manitoba, 159 Henderson Hwy., Winnipeg, MB R2L 1L4. A generous, kind, wise, hard-working and loving woman of integrity is with God now. We'll never forget her; her legacy lives on in all of us.

My sympathy to your whole family at this time of grief and sadness. I didn't know her personally, but listened to stories from David and marvelled at her qualities. I taught school with Kate in Winkler...she quickly became a dear friend of mine...I spent many Saturdays at her house, listening to her stories and sampling her chili and homemade buns. She gave me alot of support and encouragement and total acceptance. She kept up the letter writing, even after I moved to Calgary. I will miss her dearly. - Posted by: Joyce Hemminger (Friend) on: Oct 22, 2012

I met Kate while teaching in Winkler, and she welcomed me into her home, literally with red carpet, and that was the epitome of her hospitality - always generous with her time and the fresh home-made buns she served her guests. One Christmas I received a home-knit sweater which I still wear. She was always cheerful and encouraging and made me feel that I was part of her family when I visited there. She saw me through many seasons of my life. She was a faithful, letter-writer and often wrote, "I wish you could come for tea..." even though I lived 2000 miles away. I loved Kate and Dave, and their household was a warm, pleasant place to visit. I will greatly miss her friendship. I am very sorry for the family, to have lost her so soon in her life. My condolences to them and I'm sure she has left her indelible mark on their lives. - Posted by: Eunice Seney (teacher friend) on: Oct 19, 2012
