WILLIAM RICHARD APPLEBY
Date of Passing: Oct 17, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWILLIAM RICHARD APPLEBY September 23, 1923 - October 17, 2012 Sadly, our Dad, Grandpa, brother and uncle, Bill Appleby, peacefully passed away at the St. Boniface Hospital at age 89. Bill was predeceased by his wife, Constance, son Richard and parents Orange William Oswald Appleby and Hazel Irene Appleby. He is survived by his four children: Cathie (Glen) Eliasson, William Appleby (Laurie Phillips), Mary Anne Appleby, and Elizabeth Appleby-Levin, and his grandchildren Cara and Anne Hedley, Stephanie, Katie and Melinda Appleby, Eric and Emily Levin, and Carrlon Appleby. Also his sister Patricia (Martin) Christie (Toronto), sisters and brothers-in-law, Lenore and Roy Williams (Vancouver) and Brian and Carole Johannesson (Kitchener), as well as many nieces and nephews. Bill was born September 23, 1923 in Norwood and graduated from Norwood Collegiate Institute. His post-secondary education was interrupted by service as an officer in the Canadian Navy during the Second World War, and then continued at the University of Manitoba where he earned his Bachelor of Arts, Law and Masters of Law degrees. At the university he was very active in politics and student affairs. During his term as president of the Canadian University Debating Union, his debate team captured the Western Canadian championship, the McGowan Cup. Bill's final year saw him elected President of the Manitoba Students' Union. In 1950, with his Bachelor of Law degree in hand, Bill formed a partnership with his childhood friend, Aleck Thorarinson, and became active in the oil industry and land development. This was the start of a very varied 50 year career in the general practice of law. At the same time, his interest in politics heightened; he became president of the Young Liberals Federation of Canada and, later, president of the Manitoba Liberal Association. He went on to serve a six-year term as an alderman for the city of St. Boniface and then a ten-year appointment as its city solicitor. Sports played a significant role in Bill's life. He played fastball in his early years and continued to enjoy the game as a member of a Law league team. He was an avid tennis player, a life-long member of the Royal Lake of the Woods Yacht Club, and had many fond memories of times spent on the courts. Athletics played a large role in the Appleby family's life. A love of sports was instilled in all five children who became very active in swimming, hockey, baseball and speed skating. Along with coaching and officiating, he served as the president of the Canadian Amateur Swimming Association (Manitoba division) as well as president of the River Heights Speed Skating Association. One of Bill's most memorable projects was forming the Winnie the Bear Commemorative Committee with his lifelong friend, Fred Colebourn, and their wives. They successfully met their goal by creating a statue of Fred's father, Harry, and the bear cub he adopted and named Winnie, who became the inspiration for A.A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh. Statues stand in the Winnipeg and London, England zoos. In recognition of Bill's role in the project, the sculptor placed an apple on the base of the statue. Bill enthusiastically supported his children and grandchildren in all of their endeavours and instilled in them a love of books and reading. He was quick-witted with a brilliant sense of humour and engaged his kids and grandkids in all sorts of ongoing games and jokes. Any gathering was more fun with him; he was the life of the party. Many wonderful hours were spent at Bill's favourite place, the cottage on Coney Island. A strong sense of family was created, he felt, due mostly to Connie's love and dedication. When the children were young, Connie would drive the boat while Bill and all five kids waterskied behind! He spent almost 60 summers there. A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 22 at 1:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery). Reception to follow. Private interment for immediate family will be held where he will be laid to rest with his wife Connie and son Richard. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 www.nbardal.mb.ca

Wanted to pass on my condolences to the Appleby family. I was very fortunate to meet your father 20 years ago. I purchased some property from him on Coney Island and he was always helpful, caring and thoughtful. Loved to hear a few old tales whenever we had an opportunity to share a drink or two. He will be greatly missed on his beloved Coney Island. Cheers to both your mother and father. Two wonderful people! Bruce Eakin - Posted by: Bruce Eakin () on: Oct 21, 2012

I send my deepest sympathy to the family of a very great and gentle man. I send blessings,....... I knew your father while I was in the Young Liberals in the 60s, he was a good friend of my mother Lora Fraser who also was in the Party. They were both delegates when Lester Pearson was elected Federal leader. My Mother told me when she got home that your Dad was the 1 vote Lloyd Henderson got that your Dad said "he is such a nice man I will vote for him," not knowing it would be the only vote, Every time they met they would laugh about it as the phrase was made. One vote Henderson, just a little laugh and memory . I am sorry I will not be able to attend the funeral but have a hard time getting about, AGAIN MY BLESSINGS AND G'D be with you Maureen (Fraser ) Anderson. - Posted by: Maureen ( Fraser ) Anderson (Friend of years ago ) on: Oct 20, 2012

I am truly sorry to hear of your recent loss of your dad. I extend my sincere sympathy to all of you at what I know is a very sad and mournful time. I know first hand how profound a loss it is when you realize that he will no longer be there for all the events in your life. I can tell you though that the very best way to mark his passing is by filling your mind with all of the wonderful memories you have of happier times. Your dad lived a long and rewarding life and accomplished so much in his lifetime. He will long be remembered as the hardworking, intelligent and loving man that he was. My thoughts and prayers will be with all of you. May you find comfort in the outpouring of sympathy from all of us who share your loss.
