CALVIN ANDREW RUSSELL July 29, 1916 - October 19, 2012 Peacefully, on Friday, October 19, 2012, our Dad, Calvin A. Russell, age 96 of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away at Deer Lodge Personal Care Home. Dad was raised in Winnipeg but also lived a few years with his grandparents who farmed in Carman, Manitoba. As a young man he spent several years as a merchant marine on the Great Lakes, where he developed an interest in steam engineering. The Second World War called him to duty and he joined the Navy, continuing his passion to feed the steam driven turbines driving the ship. His love for a small tot of rum in later life can be blamed on his Navy years. In 1943, Dad married Patricia Suffron, and over the 69 years they were married they raised three children, Barrie (Louise) Russell, Gordon (Judy) Russell and Christine (Derek) Giles. They were also proud grandparents of six grandchildren, Teresa (Edmund), Bryan, Robert (Sherri), Chelsey (Eric), Gordon (Angie) and Levis; and six great-grandchildren Jordan, Ally, Hannah, Owen, Grady and Bennett. He is also survived by his sister Jean Putnam, sister-in-law Swann Suffron and brother-in-law Steve Kralka. Dad lived most of his life in Charleswood becoming an avid curler at the Charleswood Club. He spent many happy years camping, hiking, and fishing with his family at the Big Whiteshell. Dad spent the last one and a half years at Deer Lodge Care Home. The family wishes to thank the staff for the loving care they provided to Dad during that time. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2012, at Charleswood United Church at 11:00 a.m. Private interment will take place later at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Dad to the charity of one's choice. We will miss you Dad. You are the Best!! Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • My sympathies go out to the family. I met Mr. Russell while I was a medical student and he was my resident I was assigned to. My strongest memory of him was when I suggested to him that when his wife came to visit, that he give her a kiss. When she visited, I reminded him of this and he smiled and gave his wife a great big kiss on the lips. - Posted by: Jeffrey (Nurse) on: Dec 02, 2012
