EVELYN MAE NICOL May 20, 1932 - October 20, 2012 On the evening of October 20, 2012, Evelyn Mae Nicol died peacefully at Oakview Place in Winnipeg. She is survived by her daughters Susan Nicol (Dennis Mearon), and Diane Lefley (Glen Lefley), and grandchildren Amanda and Nolan Lefley. She was predeceased by husband Allan Richard Nicol (1981), father Archibald Morrison (1973), mother Vera Morrison (Nunn) (1971), and brother Neil Morrison (1991). Evelyn was born May 20, 1932, in Stonewall and grew up on the family farm near Ideal, MB. As a young child, Evelyn rode her pony or hitched her collie to a sled to attend a one-room schoolhouse a mile away. The family moved to Stonewall when Evelyn was a teenager. She graduated from Stonewall Collegiate with the second highest physics marks in the province, earning her a scholarship to attend the University of Manitoba where she double-majored in physics and chemistry. In 1950, Evelyn was crowned Stonewall Carnival Queen. She traded her tiara for a baseball glove when she joined the St. Boniface Athletics as their star third basemen. Her arm to first caught the eye of her future husband Allan who wanted to know who the attractive woman was who threw like a man. The couple soon married in 1953 and lived in Winnipeg for 14 years. In 1967 Evelyn returned to her roots when the family relocated to Stonewall. While being a wife and mother was her primary career, Evelyn also worked briefly at Eaton's, the Stonewall Hospital, and with Home Care. Her interests were many, ranging from history to hand-made crafts, geography to gardening, sewing to sports. She was a long-time member of the Anglican Church Women, Church of the Ascension in Stonewall. Evelyn was a meticulous homemaker, taking great pride in her yard and flower gardens in particular. Evelyn was known for her sense of humour, generous spirit and caring nature. She had a bright smile and an infectious laugh that lit up any room she was in. Evelyn would often be seen on long walks around Stonewall, or in the corner booth at Sig's having coffee with friends. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and community. Funeral service to be held at the Stonewall Anglican Church, corner of First Avenue North and Second Street West, Thursday, October 25, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. MACKENZIE FUNERAL CHAPEL STONEWALL (204) 467-2525 mackhome@mts.net
