GIOVANNI (JOHN) GIANCOLA Peacefully, November 1, 2012, Giovanni (John) Giancola, husband, dad, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away at home embraced by his wife Lucia and surrounded by the love of his family. Dad was born in Castelpetroso, Isernia, Italy, March 14, 1929, to Angelo and Filomena Giancola. He married his beloved wife Lucia in 1953. Their son Angelo was born in 1955 and not long after Gabriele in 1956. The four of them journeyed on an adventure to Canada in 1957, for better opportunities. After a few short years living in rural Manitoba, they chose to call Winnipeg their home with daughters Rosina born in 1965, and Lisa following in 1969. Their family was now complete! Dad worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway for 37 years, retiring in 1995. Dad truly enjoyed the simple things in life. Particularly the outdoors, biking, walking, gardening, opera, music, basking in the sun, going to the beach, playing cards and travelling. Dad adored his wife Lucia and treasured spending time with his family. His most cherished times were family gatherings and enjoying countless hours taking his grandchildren and great-grandchildren to parks. Nonno was their biggest fan, cheering them on at their various activities. Dad/Nonno was proud of each and every one of us. With Mom's unwavering love and care Dad fought a six year battle against cancer with courage, dignity and determination, stoically maintaining his independence until his last days. Left to forever cherish his memory are his beloved wife Lucia, his sons Angelo (Debbie), Gabe (Patricia), and daughters Rosina (Jack Gordon), Lisa (Phil Tokarz), 10 grandchildren, as well as 4 great grandchildren, and a large extended family both in Canada and Italy. Waiting to welcome him in heaven are his mom and dad, his brother Felice, his sister Maria and grandson Evan. We are eternally grateful for Dad's team of caregivers Dr. Czaykowski, Dr. Reslerova, Dr. Ross, nurses Denise, Jennifer, Sarah-Jane and all of the other wonderful staff at CancerCare and Palliative Care for their professionalism and personal touch. Also, many thanks to Father Sam for his spiritual guidance. Prayers will be Tuesday, November 6 at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, November 7 at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Sam Argenziano officiating. Both held at Holy Rosary Parish, 510 River Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Interment to follow at Glen Eden. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dad's memory can be made to CancerCare Manitoba or Palliative Care Program. Reposo in pace. We all love you. 204-586-8044

  • We will truly miss seeing John (also known as Mr.Italiano according to our 3 year old daughter) across the street from our house. He was always there to greet us with a friendly wave while he basked in the sun, ran up and down the driveway or swept away the dirt, leaves or snow. No matter what season it was or what time of day, we could always count on seeing his sweet face. While there is now a change on our street, the warm memories of John will always be there. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. - Posted by: Dawn, Mike & Mischa Osciak (Neighbor) on: Nov 06, 2012
