EDWARD JAMES SMITH 1934 - 2012 It is with heavy hearts that our family announces the passing of Edward James Smith, Father, Husband and GrandEd on Monday, October 29, 2012, in St. Albert, Alberta at the age of 77. He leaves his wife of 49 years, Mary, daughter Shannon and son-in-law Ken, his three grandchildren, Emily, Jennifer and Katrina, and his cat Lucy. Born and raised in Winnipeg, MB, the son of Mary and James H. Smith, he lived most of his life in Winnipeg where he was an Accredited Public Accountant serving clients in Manitoba and Saskatchewan for over 55 years. He married his best friend and the love of his life, Mary, on June 1, 1963. Edward enjoyed spending time with his family, the company of good friends, listening to opera and classical music and fine dining. He appreciated a wide range of opinions and was easily engaged by a spirited conversation about philosophy, religion, money, politics and the economy. He always supported his family and was very interested in hearing about their passions and progress. He often talked about his belief in a foundation for life that involved God, Education, and Music (GEM). He strongly valued the authentic work and teachings of the Salvation Army. A gathering to honour and celebrate Edward's life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2012, in the reception room of Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. A private family interment will occur at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Edward's memory to the Salvation Army Memorial Fund, P.O Box 1932, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 3R2. • I saw "Uncle" Ed, as we called him, frequently when I was growing up. I have very fond memories of him. He had a significant influence on my intellectual development during my teenage years and into my twenties as he liked to discuss issues and would always cut through poorly-founded arguments. As a result, he taught me a lot about clear thinking, and that has helped me throughout my life. Rest in Peace Uncle Ed. - Posted by: Stephen Watson (friend of family) on: Nov 09, 2012
