Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJAMES DOUGLAS SMITH 1927 2012 Peacefully on November 24, Doug, beloved husband of Chris, passed away at the Grace Hospital. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Jim Smith (Debbie), and Pam Smith (Rick Literovich), as well as his two grandsons, Matthew and Ian Literovich, who thought the world of their Grandpa. He also leaves to mourn his passing his two sisters in BC, Gertie Rostek (Art) and Irene Morrison, his two nieces, Jean Jolivet and Lynn Middleton, and two nephews Jeff and Mark Farmer. Doug was born and raised in Winnipeg, living in East Kildonan for most of the last 50 years. He and Chris were very community minded, being charter members of Immanuel United Church where he served as a trustee for many years. Doug was a long time member of the East Kildonan Kiwanis Club and served 20 years on the board of the Municipal Hospitals (Riverview). He worked for 35 years for the federal government as an excise tax auditor until his retirement in 1992. He then became Matthew and Ian's favourite chauffeur, entertaining them with his stories and listening to theirs. The family would like to thank the staff at Victoria Emergency, Grace ICU and Grace 3 south for the exemplary care and compassion they showed to Doug and his family in the last four months. A memorial service celebrating Doug's life will be held on Saturday, December 1 at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel United Church, 755 Golspie St. with Rev. Nancy Sanders officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Immanuel United Church, 755 Golspie St. R2K 2V4 or to the Grace Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Drive, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3J 3M7, (204) 837-0375. JD was awesome. I left Immanuel for a year, and just came back and just found out now. It feels a little more empty without him. :( - Posted by: Adam Johnston (Fellow church member) on: Sep 15, 2013

I have known JD as a fellow Kiwanian for almost 20 years. There was no one better at saying Grace before our meeting meals. To his family my condolences, particularly to his wife Chris whom I knew though my teaching career in East Kildonan long before I met JD at Kiwanis. I know he was a proud father and a very active member of Immanuel United Church. He will no doubt continue to be in our saviors hand in a better place! Sorry, unable to attend the service but my thoughts are with Chris and family at this time. - Posted by: Ron Bodner (fellow Kiwanian) on: Dec 01, 2012
