Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDIRK JOHN ARONDEUS It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of John Arondeus at River East Personal Care Home on Saturday, November 24, 2012, at the age of 91, with family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Jean, daughters Derryn Few (Ian), Judy Rempel (John) and Colleen Enns (Peter). Left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren Scott Luit (Christine), Kevin Luit; Melissa Rempel, Jarrett Rempel (Amy); Derrick Enns and Craig Enns, and great-grandchildren Jessica and Emma Luit, Phoenix Luit, Caleb Rempel. John was born in Elmwood on April 3, 1921. His passion for sports began at an early age at Kelvin Community Club where he was first introduced to hockey and lacrosse. His involvement with lacrosse led to his induction into the Manitoba Lacrosse Hall of Fame as a player, builder and most recently as the coach of the National 1954 and 1955 Minto Cup champions. John's skill and more importantly his determination were recognized by scouts which led to an invitation to try out for the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL. The call to duty was stronger than the lure of the NHL and he chose to enlist in the R.C.A.F. to serve his country in the Second World War in 1942. He received his Flying Officer "wings" on the eve of his wedding in September 1943 and was promptly shipped overseas. John served in Burma, India as a navigator on search and rescue missions. Upon returning home in 1945, Jean and John finally began their life together. John started his career as an electrical contractor as owner of Kelvin Electric Ltd. In 1951, Jean and John joined the Kiwanis Club of East Kildonan where they made many lifelong friends and John served as president in 1956. John was a devoted, long time member of John Black United Church where he gave of his time selflessly. John loved to curl in the winter, golf in the summer but tennis was all year long. Retirement allowed for more travel to Europe, Hawaii and many winters vacationing in Florida where Jean and John were often joined by their children and grandchildren making for wonderful memories. John was a wonderful, devoted husband, father and friend who will be missed dearly. "A life well lived!" The family would like to thank River East Personal Care Home and especially the angels on Charity Road for the dignity, compassion, respect and friendship given to John. We are forever grateful. A Celebration of John's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 1, 2012 at John Black United Church, 898 Henderson Hwy. By request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation 200 - 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. Cropo Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements, 204-586-8044.

John and I began a weekly tennis match when he was about 64 that went on for several years, until his knees finally gave out. As others have said, he was a true gentleman, on the court and off. I just learned of his passing today, Christmas Eve. So sorry to have missed his service. May God comfort you, Jean, and all of your loved ones. - Posted by: Don James (Friend/Tennis buddy) on: Dec 24, 2012

On any Sunday morning John and Jean could be found in the second last pew with other veterans. John took the teasing from the Navy boys very well. John made church going a pleasure and he will be missed. Our thoughts and condolences are with Jean and family. In the late 60's we started the Key Club (junior Kiwanis club) at Miles Mac High School. Periodically we were invited to Kiwanis meetings where I met John. He always had a big smile and a warm pat on the back. I also saw him many times at Rossmere where I was a junior golfer. Same big smile and always a warm greeting from John. Although I haven't seen him for 50 years I still remember him with much respect. He was a true friend to young people. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Greg Sawatzky - Calgary () on: Nov 28, 2012

John coached us in Junior lacrosse when we travelled East and West in l954 and l955 in search of the Minto Cup. Although we never won, our experience was enriched by his leadership and guidance. Thank you, John, for just, 'being there' for us and making them memorable trips. Rest well, old friend. - Posted by: Ralph Lyndon () on: Nov 28, 2012

I first met John as a teenager employed at Four Season Tennis club. John was an avid tennis player and participated in both the physical and social aspects of the tennis club. His positive attitude was evident whether he won or lost a match. I would describe John as having a kind yet competitive spirit a Real "Gentleman". Thank you John for your friendship and standing beside me as I was baptised at John Black. I can't be there on Saturday to celebrate your life with your family and friends but I will be watching the sky as you "SMASH" the stars in Heaven's court. - Posted by: Bill Toews (Friend) on: Nov 28, 2012
