SISTER DENISE MARCHAND (Sister Helene Lucille) With sorrowful hearts, we, Les Filles de la Croix, wish to announce the passing of our dear Sister Denise Marchand on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at the age of 80. Denise was predeceased by her parents, Lucien Marchand and Thérèse Pelletier, her brothers-in-law, Georges de Moissac, Henri Bazin, Gérald Carrière and Denis Reid. She leaves to mourn her brothers Raymond and Maurice (Lise Payment) and her sisters, Laurette (Georges Charlet), Lucille, Hélène, Marguerite (Roger DeGagné), her sister-in-law, Nicole Gauthier, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Sister Denise was born on February 27, 1932, in Raith, ON. She attended school in Marquette, in St. Adolphe, and in St. Claude, MB. Upon completing high school in 1951, Denise began her religious formation and pronounced her final vows in 1958. She then became a school teacher and taught in St. Adolphe, and in St. Claude, MB, as well as in Alida and Laflèche, SK. Sister Denise always had a deep concern for the less fortunate, and, in 1972, she qualified for a position in Social Work. She exercised her ability to listen and to counsel in the Winnipeg School Division, in Foyer Renaissance, Quebec, at White Bear (Carlyle, SK) and in St. Norbert, MB. She was also heartily involved with the work of Jean Vanier in Foi et Partage . We will remember Denise for her compassion and loving care of those in need. She had many interests and freely expressed her love of beauty in nature, music, art, gardening, knitting and patchwork. Everything in life inspired her prayer, whether it be an event or a relationship. In the last years of her life, as a resident of Foyer Valade, she was appreciated by all for her good sense of humour. The family and the Sisters wish to thank the staff at Foyer Valade for the loving care given to Sister Denise in the last years of her life. The funeral mass for Sister Denise will be celebrated in the chapel of Villa Aulneau, 601 Aulneau Street, on December 27 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in the St. Adolphe Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice. LECLAIRE BROTHERS in care of arrangements 204-775-2220

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Sr Denise saved my life. I lived in carlyle sask and knew her through my mom and the church there. I had a son at 18 years old. That coupled with the fact that I had just lost my job threw me into a deep dark depression. Just when I had decided to end it all, Denise showed up and talked me out of it. She made me go to church again and that was the best thing I ever did. I loved Sister Denise like a second mother and will always be grateful for the time she spent with me. - Posted by: Trynna Vandenberg Blais (friend ) on: Aug 25, 2013

  • It was with great sadness when I noticed the passing of Sr. Denise. I will always remember her gentle words and the encouragement she gave me. The love she shared for my daughter when I was a single mom. I only wish I came to see you more. - Posted by: Diane L'Arrivee (friend) on: Jan 21, 2013

  • I will always have fond memories of my namesake, also known as “La Grande Denise” when she visited. She was always very kind, open-hearted, and had a great sense of humour. She was great with us kids, but also shared a love of knitting with my mother. One day when she was visiting us in Ottawa, she assisted my mum with knitting the back of a sweater. They had misunderstood each other when discussing the pattern and Ma Tante had increased the rows incorrectly. She had already knitted 8-10 inches of the back of the sweater when she and Mum realized their mistake. Ma Tante just started unravelling it like nothing. My mum felt so bad – all that work for nothing! But Denise was fine with it; it was just one of those things that happen. And she started again, increasing the stitches correctly. She told us that she doesn’t mind a challenge. Why, once she shared a room with another nun, and found she couldn’t sleep. To not bother the other nun, she cracked the curtains open just an inch or so to let the street light in, and knitted by that tiny light until sleepiness overcame her. She was really one of a kind. I will miss her deeply. I’m sorry I can’t be there with you today in Manitoba. All my love, “La Petite Denise” Marchand, Ottawa - Posted by: Denise Marchand (Niece) on: Dec 27, 2012
