READER BEN SHUVERA February 5, 1937 - December 20, 2012 On December 20, 2012, our father, Reader Ben Shuvera, Fell asleep in the lord. Remaining to cherish Dad's memory are his loving wife Elaine of 53 years. Son David (Karen): Daughter Heather; Son Robert (Gina); Grand-children Ryan, Kaitlin, Cassidy and Nicole. Siblings, brother Steve, sisters Marie, Josie, Sophie (Andy), Pauline, Elaine (Jim). Brothers-in-law Al Horton, James Onysko (Sonia), and Michael Onysko (Ginette) along with numerous nieces and nephews. On August 3, 2003, our father was Tonsured by his Eminence Metropolitan John as Reader for the Orthodox Church for his dedicated and service in Christ Vineyard giving him the title of Reader Ben Shuvera. Dad was born in Caliento, Manitoba, where he grew up on the farm as one of 17 children. He attended Shevchenko High School where he met Mom and they later married in 1959. Dad taught at one room schools in Fisher Branch and Sarto for three years. Later Dad and Mom moved to Transcona where he continued to teach for the next 33 years. Dad and Mom retired together in 1992, and they spent many wonderful years at their family cottage, they enjoyed the outdoors and all its beauty. Together they tended to their many flower beds that were enjoyed by the neighbors and the deer. In December 2008, Mom was diagnosed with cancer. Dad was continually by her side and helped her through her successful battle. In April 2010, Dad was diagnosed with cancer, he and Mom switched roles as caregivers. Mom was always by his side providing love and comfort. Dad remained positive and upbeat and never lost his determination to continue on with life. His courage, strength and love will forever live in our hearts. On September 30, 2012, Reader Ben was presented by his Eminence Yurij, Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada, a Metropolitans's Hramota for Dad's many years as service as a Reader/Cantor. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Dr. P. Harris and the staff in the Oncology department at Concordia Hospital and the staff of the Palliative care unit at St. Boniface Hospital for their care and compassion. Prayers will take place at All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 1500 Day Street; on Thursday December 27, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 28, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 1500 Day St. R2C-1E4 or CancerCare Manitoba, 1160-675 McDermot Ave. R3E-0V9.   • I began my teaching career @Westview in 1964 with Ben.Ernie & Lloyd...they were mentors to a naive young teacher,with Vic Woyna! Lots of memories. I returned afew years ago for the 50th & there were the three stooges,friends as ever! Very sad to see Ben's obtiuary but he accomplisded alot.
