JANIS MCGONIGLE (nee TODD) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Janis Marie McGonigle on December 22, 2012, who left us peacefully at home after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born August 3, 1948, and grew up in Winnipeg. She married Bill and lived in Edson, Alberta, for many years before relocating back to Winnipeg. Janis was pre-deceased by her father Gilbert (Gib). Left to cherish her memory: her two loving daughters Jennifer (Jay Penner) and Kelly (Scott Jeffers), her mother Lillian, her brothers Larry and Rick, her sister Barb McDougall, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Janis was also blessed to have many close cousins and lifelong friends. Janis' favourite times were spent at the cabin with family enjoying the sun on the dock. She loved her Wednesday evening trips to the casino and her many years of volunteering at the Victoria General Hospital gift shop. Throughout the years Janis also enjoyed curling, gardening and travelling, at every opportunity, to new places. Her career path led her to positions at Powell Equipment, Manitoba Hydro, Great West Life, Alberta Treasury Branches and, lastly, as an Administrative Assistant at the H.L.H.P. Research Institute at the University of Manitoba, where she found great pleasure in assisting with the graduate program. Janis will forever be remembered for her selflessness, her generosity and her joy of life. Her strength and courage has been an inspiration to all that have had the privilege of knowing her. The family would like to express sincere thanks to those at Health Sciences Centre, Victoria General Hospital, CancerCare, and W.H.R.A. Palliative Care for their care, compassion and visits to Janis during this difficult time. A special thank you to Dr. Lori Hilderman for her unwavering and persistent advocating of Janis' care throughout her illness. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2012, at 2:00 p.m., Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. God Saw You God saw you getting tired, When a cure was not to be. So He wrapped His arms around you, And whispered, Come to me . You didn't deserve what you went through, So He gave you rest. God's garden must be beautiful, He only takes the best. And when we saw you sleeping, So peaceful and free from pain We could not wish you back To suffer that again. Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • I had the honor to work with Janis at the Centre on Aging in the early 1990s and then at the HLHP Research Institute for quite a few years. Once when asked at a faculty retreat “what is your favorite part of working at the Research Institute”, I gushed that “it was my daily encounters with Janis.” I think I embarrassed her, but it was true. Janis was always so very busy at work, but never too busy to stop and give you her undivided attention. I valued her work ethic, her desire to be constructive and helpful, and her unique and amazing skill set. What I most admired though was her people skills. Janis was the kind of person who gives you faith in the goodness of people. Her sincerity, modesty, and genuine interest in others was simply contagious. She will be missed by so many people. To sister (Barb) and brothers (Larry and Rick)... it is tragic to have lost your sibling who should have been there to share so many other times ahead. I am so sorry. To Lillian, I have heard there is nothing to match the grief of losing a child; I wish you strength. To Kelly and Jennifer, your mom spoke of you both often through pictures and stories. Her love for you was palpable; she cherished you both! I too lost my mom at a young age and my heart goes out to you. The journey ahead will not be easy, but your mom’s strength and character will guide you through it. - Posted by: Judy Chipperfield (friend and co-worker) on: Jan 16, 2013

  • Janis was always nice and supportive to us. I still remember her smile and warm words, which will stay in my mind. We will miss you, Janis! No one can replace you in HLHP because you knew everything and you could give us the answers at any time we had questions. Thank you! - Posted by: Miao (Graduate student) on: Jan 02, 2013

  • I learned this sad news from Dr. Kelly MacKay, my Master supervisor at the University of Manitoba. I simply can't believe this and miss Janis so much! During 2005-2007, I was the master student at the H.L.H.P. Research Institute, Janis took care of all the graduate students, especially international students. She was like a friend, a grandma who was always being so kind, so helpful, and so caring. To her family, although I'm in Alberta and have missed the funeral on Saturday, at this moment and in the future, my heart is always with you. I believe when Janis watches us in the heaven, she'd always want to see our smiling faces, just like she used to be. Take care! Janis, all the graduate students will always remember you! - Posted by: Haidong Liang (Graduate Student ) on: Dec 31, 2012

  • Janis & I grew up cousins & friends. Life & marriage took us in different directions, but we always had that connection. Whenever we'd get together at family dues, it was like no time had passed. Janis had a friendliness & personality second to none!! We love you & will miss your smile. Rest in peace, dear cousin. Till we all meet again. My deepest sympathy to Jen, Kelly, Larry, Rick, Barb & Auntie Lil xoxoxoxoxoxo - Posted by: Lesley Townsend Hazlehurst (Cousin) on: Dec 29, 2012

  • I met Janis at her dentist office and we chatted when she came in. She was such a wonderful gentle lady. My deepest condolences to the family. Losing someone special is always very difficult but more so at this time of the year. May wonderful memories give you peace and strength. My thoughts are with you all. - Posted by: Marina Di Nella (acquaintance) on: Dec 28, 2012

  • My deepest sympathies to the family. I worked with Janis at the University of Manitoba and found her to be a most generous and giving person. Her very likeable personality and disposition made working with Janis a joy everyday. I am saddened to her of her passing. Her place at the HLHP Research Institute will be difficult to fill!! - Posted by: Valerie Kraushar (Work Colleague) on: Dec 27, 2012

  • To Jennifer and Kelly my sincere condolences. Janis and I met at Manitoba Hydro in the late 60's when we were both working in the key punch dept. We have kept in touch over the years and since her return to Winnipeg, Janis has been part of a group of five former co-workers at Manitoba Hydro who have been getting together for lunch a couple of times a year. We always had tons of laughs. Our group will truly miss you Janis. Rest in peace. - Posted by: Marilyn Bradley (Friend) on: Dec 27, 2012

  • Kelly and Jennifer, we are truly sorry for your loss. We have lost a lot of people in our lives but few have touched us so deeply. We shared some wonderful times and they will remain in our hearts forever. We send you our love and prayers. - Posted by: Mary & Harold Jeffers (Friends) on: Dec 27, 2012

  • I am so sad to hear the news of Janis passing. During my time in graduate school at the University of Manitoba, she was one of my biggest supporters. I loved to visit her even if she was in the building over. I am glad she is no longer in pain and can receive the rest she deserves. Thank you for everything Janis. I send strength to the family. The University of Manitoba has lost an amazing person! - Posted by: Helena Baert (Former Graduate Student) on: Dec 27, 2012

  • I am so sorry for your loss. I will always remember the good times we had at the lake. The happy hour was my personal favorite. The chocolate cake. And lots of sunshine, sitting on the doock, eating munchies....Memories last forever and cannot be taken away. Love Peggy - Posted by: Peggy Keenan (friend) on: Dec 27, 2012
