MARVIN DOUGLAS GRAHAM SCHNELL December 23, 1947 - December 24, 2012 In loving memory of my husband Doug, who lost his battle to Cancer on December 24, 2012. Doug leaves to mourn his wife Judy; daughter Rhonda and Jim, grandchildren Alexander and Nikolas; his son Geoffrey and Erika; brothers Don and Malcolm; many aunts, uncles and cousins. Doug was predeceased by his parents Don and Dorothea. Doug was married to his wife Judy for 43 years. Doug attended Churchill High School and graduated from Gordon Bell High School for his final Grade 12 year. After graduating, Doug worked in sales and marketing with various organizations such as Moyers School Supply and Scripline. Doug became ill with Liver Disease at the age of 34. After becoming ill he devoted the majority of his time to family and volunteering in the community. Doug worked as a volunteer for many years at the local Varsity View Community Centre as well as the Winnipeg Monarchs and Winnipeg Blackhawks hockey clubs. In 1991 Doug was a part of the Winnipeg Hawks Midget Hockey team that won the 1991 Air Canada Cup as the Top Midget team in Canada. In addition Doug did some player scouting for Princeton University and the Tacoma Rockets of the WHL during the 1990s. After many years, Doug won his battle with Liver Disease after getting a transplant on November 11, 1997. Doug celebrated this victory by travelling with his wife Judy extensively in the new millennium. Highlights included trips to London, Paris, Stockholm, a tour throughout Italy, a trip to explore Australia, as well as tours of Spain, Morocco and Portugal. In total Doug explored four continents in his 65 years. Later in his life Doug enjoyed planning his next trips with Judy and exploring new places; as well as his passion for Hockey, the Montreal Canadians, the Winnipeg Jets and Formula One racing. He could always be found at his grandson's sports and extracurricular events with a smile on his face. The family would like to thank the staff of St. Boniface Hospital and the Health Sciences Centre. A special thanks to the compassionate and caring staff of Riverview Palliative Care Unit. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kelsey King Scholarship Fund for Linden Meadows School or the Lions Foundation for Tuxedo Chapter in Winnipeg. A Memorial Service will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 12:00 Noon. 204-586-8044

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I did not realize that Doug had passed away until just recently. I was fortunate to have taught Doug at Churchill high school. Doug was truly a genuine person - honest as"the day was long". I did not see Doug that often after school but when we did it was always a great conversation. A very caring person. So sorry he left us at a relatively young age. My sincere sympathy to his family. Doug was a wonderful person. Art. Bryant- teacher. - Posted by: Art Bryant (teacher) on: Apr 08, 2016

  • Remembering Doug, this first Christmas after his passing with love and respect! I miss him dropping by the office often for a chat telling me about his and Judy's next adventure abroad! Thinking of you as well Judy as I know too well Christmas is a hard time of year when you have lost someone so dear! - Posted by: Cliff King (nephew) on: Dec 12, 2013

  • We are truly sorry and saddened to hear of Doug's passing. We have known Doug for many years as a result of our sons involvement in hockey. We always saw him at the rinks or at hockey tournaments. It was always a pleasure seeing and talking with Doug. He always had positive things to say about any person or player. Our sincerest condolences to Judy and Doug's family. - Posted by: Bob and Judy Carey, Jason, Paul and Tim (Old hockey friends) on: Dec 30, 2012

  • I knew Doug since we were about 3 or 4 years of age. We shared many interesting weekends at West Hawk Lake when we were teens. Doug was always full of life and not afraid to experience it. Always at the ready to help his friends in need. As a young adult I moved West to Alberta and didn't see each other as often as we would have liked. He will be fondly remembered. Old friends Clint and Audrey Lewis of Red Deer, Alberta. - Posted by: Clint Lewis (Old friend) on: Dec 29, 2012
