RAYMOND HERBERT TILLEY It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Raymond Herbert Tilley on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at the age of 88. Ray was predeceased by his loving wife Audrey on November 2, 2011. Ray leaves his children Paul (Shirley), Ardith (Peter) and Mark; grandchildren Michael (Laurie) and Raymond (Melanie) Hall, Heather and Kevin Tureski; great-grandchildren Julia and Avery Hall; sister Ellen Harold, bother-in-law Jim Clark and many nephews, nieces and cousins who were an important part of his life. Ray was born to Doris (Hewlett) and Herbert Tilley on February 26, 1924, and was raised with his sister Ellen and cousin Beverley in the west end of Winnipeg where he attended Isaac Brock School and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. Following in the footsteps of his dad, Ray worked at the Manitoba Telephone System from 1941 until his retirement in 1983. It was there that Ray met Audrey and they were married on May 13, 1950, a union that lasted over 61 years. During the Second World War Ray served his country as a navigator on a De Havilland Mosquito Bomber and later in life was a proud member of the Wartime Pilots and Observers Association. Ray was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved to spend time at the family cottage at Laclu. In the winter, Ray kept busy curling and cross-country skiing, but always with one eye on both the calendar and the weather forecast, anxious for the ice to be off the lake. For Ray, there were only two seasons- lake season and waiting for lake season. A celebration of Ray's life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 18, 2013 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ray's memory may be made to Parkinson's Society Manitoba. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. • Ray was my boss when I first started at MTS in 1977. He was a good person to have as a first boss for someone just starting their career. He was always ready to help in any way and always availabe to talk, whether it was about work or not. My condolences to his family for their loss. - Posted by: Tracy Stahl (Co-worker) on: Jan 15, 2013

  • To Paul, Ardith and Mark. My deepest condolences to you on the loss of your wonderful Dad. I have fantastic memories of the many summers I spent at Laclu and Winnipeg with my favorite Uncle- fishing, boating, canoeing, and sharing stories of his Air Force days during WW2. He also liked his Winnipeg sporting teams, and each time we met, we would "tease" each other about how our teams were doing? I honour his friendship, his loving commitment to his friends and Family, and his dedicated service to his country during WW2. I will miss him deeply, but the memories he helped me build will live with me forever. He is now "in a better place", together with Aunt Audrey again! Per Ardua ad Astra. - Posted by: Dave Harold (Nephew) on: Jan 14, 2013

  • Paul and family, our heartfelt condolences to you. We will be with you in our thoughts on Friday. Your Dad was a wonderful quiet man. Unfortunately we are out of the country and are unable to attend his service. - Posted by: Trucia and Ralph Howard (friends) on: Jan 14, 2013

  • How sad - my very favourite uncle has now passed on to join in eternity my favourite aunt, his beloved Audrey. I will miss him a lot but will be comforted by the terrific memories I have of our many times together. Those fantastic summers at the lake! Along with my dad, Uncle Ray taught me to fish, to fillet a fish, to paddle a canoe and to safely operate a motor boat, including the ancient Elto one & a half. My family and I lived in Winnipeg for 5 years and we were always welcome in their home. My wife, Nancy, always remembers Ray's responses to her comments about how cold it was by saying "Yes, but it's a dry cold" as if that made it warmer! Uncle Ray was a staunch Blue Bomber and Jets' fan and enjoyed teasing me about my teams, the Leafs and Argos as often as he got the chance. I have vivid memories of that little smile on his face when he frequently asked me "how are your Maple Leafs doing?"; knowing full well that they, as usual, weren't doing well at all. Rest well, Uncle Ray - you were much loved out our way. - Posted by: Don Harold (Nephew) on: Jan 13, 2013

  • I am terribly saddened to hear the news of the sudden passing of my dear brother, Ray. I've been thinking of him night and day since I heard this news. I'm so sorry that I will be unable to attend his service as my health doesn't allow me to travel. Although my memory is not what it used to be, I do have wonderful memories of the early years growing up in Winnipeg with him and especially those many summers "at the lake". My brother was a terrific brother and a wonderful, kind man and I will miss having him in my life. - Posted by: Ellen Harold (Sister) on: Jan 13, 2013

  • To Paul and family, our sincere condolences on the loss of your Dad & families patriarch. As kids growing up at LacLu, within each our circle of friends which transcended the entire LacLu community, we got close to, or familiar with all. I will always remember Ray's contagious grin / smile with which people were greeted. My sense was that your dad carried himself tall and reserved. He made you feel comfortable and glad to know. Paul, consider this the passing of the Torch, and for certain in the LacLu community. Rod & Carolyn Westmacott - Posted by: Rod Westmacott (Fellow long time LacLu'er) on: Jan 13, 2013

  • Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Wish we could go back in time and relive all the good times we had on Mandeville Street. Your mom and dad were like an aunt and uncle to Tom and myself. Sincerely, Jim Britten, Barb May and Tom Britten - Posted by: The Britten family (Friends) on: Jan 12, 2013
