WINNIFRED EVANS The family of Winnifred sadly announce her passing on January 2, 2013, at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach, Manitoba. Win was born at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg on August 13, 1919. She was a devoted sister and aunt whose dedication to teaching wasn't driven so much for the concept of education itself, as it was for the love of children of all ages. She taught commercial education first in Morris, MB, then at Miles MacDonnell in East Kildonan, retiring in 1984. However, retirement did not mean the end of teaching. Win continued to teach Sunday School at the Anola Baptist Church and then at the Anola Fellowship Chapel, well into her 80's. She was also an enthusiastic member of the Anola Pioneer Museum, where she loved providing first hand accounts of prairie pioneer life to visitors. Her favourite groups of course were the school children who came for school trips. The Moorehouse home that is on display was the very house where Win had worked as a young girl honing her cooking skills and doing light housework for the Moorehouse family. Besides teaching full time, Win was always busy on the family farm. Summers were particularly busy with a huge garden and providing meals to the uncles in the field, wild berry picking and looking after her chickens. She was an exceptionally good cook and guests were always provided with some homemade treat to go with their visit. Win will be lovingly remembered by her sister Sylvia, nieces Cheryl (Garry), Bonnie (Manfred), nephews Archie (Bev), Bruce (Nicky), many great and great-great-nephews and nieces. She was predeceased in childhood by her father Samuel Evans Sr. and later her mother Lucy and step dad Murdock MacKinnon, brothers Sam and Wil, step nephew Gary and great nephew Brent. The family would like to thank all the staff of the 1st floor Medicine at Bethesda Hospital and Dr. Fredette of Ste. Anne for their compassionate care. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Win's life will take place on Thursday, January 17 at 1:00 p.m. at Anola Fellowship Chapel, 58006 Monominto Road, with Pastor Jack Cosens officiating. Flowers graciously declined. Should friends so desire, donations may be made to a charity of choice. Seasons Funeral Chapel ~ OakBank

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • We were out of the country for the winter and just now heard of Winnie's passing. It comes as a shock to us, as we were planning to pay her and Sylvia a visit next week in Anola. Of course we are a little sad, but also happy, knowing that she is with the Lord now. Please accept our condolences, Sylvia and family. Winnie, Sam and Will were the best neighbours anyone could ever wish for. They were like grandparents to our three children, who were always welcome at their house and farm. We all learned many things from them: Sam's love for his animals, Will's ingenuity with machinery and Winnie's delicious homemade cookies. And ever since eating 30 years of eggs from Winnie's "happy" chickens, no eggs we ever purchased anywhere even came close to that taste. There are so many things we fondly remember about Winnie. We will not forget her. Sonja, Rudy Cendra, Leslie and Jason. - Posted by: Sonja and Rudy Paas (Old Anola neighbours for more than 30 years) on: Jul 13, 2013

  • I have such warm and fond memories of Miss Evans who taught me to type in high school and so much more. I remember many teachers I have had on my life, but she is one of the dearest. At the 60th anniversary this past June many of us were talking about her - past students and staff - and wondering how she was doing. My heartfelt sympathies on the loss of such a wonderful person in your lives. - Posted by: Janine Harasymchuk (former student at Miles Mac (class of '77)) on: Jan 18, 2013

  • Martin and I met Winnie at the Anola Museum where we volunteered. A lovely, gentle, devoted lady who we both enjoyed listening to and working with. I am grateful for having known her. - Posted by: Pat Sayer (Friend) on: Jan 14, 2013
